'''Richard Joseph Meagher''' (born November 2, 1953) is a Canadian former [ice hockey](/source/ice_hockey) player. Meagher played almost 700 games in the [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) (NHL) with the [Montreal Canadiens](/source/Montreal_Canadiens), [Hartford Whalers](/source/Hartford_Whalers), [New Jersey Devils](/source/New_Jersey_Devils) and [St. Louis Blues](/source/St._Louis_Blues). He won the [Selke Trophy](/source/Frank_J._Selke_Trophy) in [1990](/source/1989%E2%80%9390_NHL_season) with the Blues. {{As of|2010}} he was a scout for the [St. Louis Blues](/source/St._Louis_Blues).

==Playing career==
Not drafted by a [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) (NHL) team, Meagher's playing career began with the [Boston University Terriers](/source/Boston_University_Terriers_men's_ice_hockey). He played four seasons at Boston University, winning numerous awards, including being named to both the First and Second All-Star teams twice. Meagher was named to the [NCAA](/source/National_Collegiate_Athletic_Association) East All-American team three times, and also was placed on the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team.

In [1977–78](/source/1977%E2%80%9378_NHL_season), Meagher was signed by the [Montreal Canadiens](/source/Montreal_Canadiens) as a free agent. He spent the first three years in the [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) (AHL) with the [Nova Scotia Voyageurs](/source/Nova_Scotia_Voyageurs). In [1979–80](/source/1979%E2%80%9380_NHL_season), Meagher played for the first time in the NHL, playing a total of two games for the Canadiens. [The following season](/source/1980%E2%80%9381_NHL_season), Meagher was traded to the [Hartford Whalers](/source/Hartford_Whalers). With Hartford, he recorded 17 points in 27 games, but still played most of the season with their AHL affiliate, the [Binghamton Whalers](/source/Binghamton_Whalers). The [1981–82](/source/1981%E2%80%9382_NHL_season) season had Meagher playing full-time in the NHL, recording 24 goals while centering a line with [Don Nachbaur](/source/Don_Nachbaur) and [Warren Miller](/source/Warren_Miller_(ice_hockey)). In [1982–83](/source/1982%E2%80%9383_NHL_season), Meagher played in only four games with the Whalers before being traded to the [New Jersey Devils](/source/New_Jersey_Devils). Meagher played three seasons with New Jersey, until [1984–85](/source/1984%E2%80%9385_NHL_season), when he was traded to the [St. Louis Blues](/source/St._Louis_Blues).

It was in St. Louis that Meagher had his most productive years, playing on a line with star [Bernie Federko](/source/Bernie_Federko). He was a two-way forward and a top penalty killer in the league. In [1989–90](/source/1989%E2%80%9390_NHL_season), a season in which he was also named [team captain](/source/St._Louis_Blues) of the Blues, Meagher received the [Frank J. Selke Trophy](/source/Frank_J._Selke_Trophy) as the league's top defensive forward. After [1990–91](/source/1990%E2%80%9391_NHL_season), Meagher retired due to injuries.
