**Richard Heinrichs** (born 1954)[1] is an American [production designer](/source/Production_designer), [effects artist](/source/Visual_effects), [art director](/source/Art_director) and film producer. He is well known for his frequent collaborations with director [Tim Burton](/source/Tim_Burton) and his work on the [*Pirates of the Caribbean* series](/source/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_(film_series)), [Ang Lee](/source/Ang_Lee)'s *[Hulk](/source/Hulk_(film))* and *[The Nightmare Before Christmas](/source/The_Nightmare_Before_Christmas)*. He started his career on visual effects on the other world sequence in *[The Watcher in the Woods](/source/The_Watcher_in_the_Woods_(1980_film))*, [Tim Burton](/source/Tim_Burton)'s *[Hansel and Gretel](/source/Hansel_and_Gretel_(1982_Disney_film))* and *[Vincent](/source/Vincent_(1982_film))* to later work on *[Alfred Hitchcock Presents](/source/Alfred_Hitchcock_Presents)* and *[Nutcracker: The Motion Picture](/source/Nutcracker%3A_The_Motion_Picture)*. He also worked on *[Frankenweenie](/source/Frankenweenie_(1984_film))*.[2] He won the [Academy Award for Best Art Direction](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Production_Design) for *[Sleepy Hollow](/source/Sleepy_Hollow_(film))* at the [72nd Academy Awards](/source/72nd_Academy_Awards),[3] and received further nominations for *[Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events](/source/Lemony_Snicket's_A_Series_of_Unfortunate_Events)* (2004) and *[Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest](/source/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean%3A_Dead_Man's_Chest)* (2006).[4]

He also contributed conceptional designs for Tim Burton's failed *[Superman Lives](/source/Superman_in_film#Superman_Lives)* project.

## Biography

Heinrichs grew up in Baltimore. He graduated from Boston University in 1976 with a degree in fine arts.[4] Heinrichs then joined [California Institute of the Arts](/source/California_Institute_of_the_Arts), where he met [Tim Burton](/source/Tim_Burton) and became a regular collaborator of his.[5] The two initially collaborated on *[The Fox and the Hound](/source/The_Fox_and_the_Hound)* at Disney.[6]
