# Richard Shorter

**Richard Nicholas Shorter** (26 July 1906 – 20 January 1984) was an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket). Shorter was a left-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman_(cricket)) who bowled right-arm [medium pace](/source/Seam_bowling). He was born at [Loughton](/source/Loughton), [Essex](/source/Essex), and was educated at [Repton School](/source/Repton_School).

Shorter made his [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) debut for [Essex](/source/Essex_County_Cricket_Club) against [Nottinghamshire](/source/Nottinghamshire_County_Cricket_Club) at [Trent Bridge](/source/Trent_Bridge) in the [1926 County Championship](/source/1926_County_Championship). He made 22 further first-class appearances for the county, the last of which came against [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) in 1929.[1] In his 23 first-class appearances, Shorter scored 108 runs at an [average](/source/Batting_average_(cricket)) of 6.00, with a high score of 21.[2] With the ball, he took 15 wickets at a [bowling average](/source/Bowling_average) of 46.33, with best figures of 3/14.[3]

He died at [Drogheda](/source/Drogheda), [County Louth](/source/County_Louth), Ireland, on 20 January 1984.
