He was elected at the [December 1910 general election](/source/December_1910_United_Kingdom_general_election) as [member of parliament](/source/member_of_parliament) (MP) for [Cheltenham](/source/Cheltenham_(UK_Parliament_constituency)), but was subsequently unseated on petition.<ref>[Dictionary of National Biography](/source/Dictionary_of_National_Biography): Gardner, Sir James Tynte Agg</ref> His brother was the Liberal candidate at the resulting [by-election in April 1911](/source/1911_Cheltenham_by-election), but lost by four votes to the [Conservative Party](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)) candidate, former MP Sir [James Agg-Gardner](/source/James_Agg-Gardner).

He was made a [baronet](/source/baronet) on 28 June 1917, of [Vaendre Hall](/source/Vaendre_Hall), [Monmouthshire](/source/Monmouthshire).<ref name="londongazette-1917-08-10">London Gazette, issue 30224 published on 10 August 1917. Page 10 of 48</ref>

In 1918 he was made a [Deputy Lieutenant](/source/Deputy_Lieutenant) of [Monmouthshire](/source/Monmouthshire)<ref name="londongazette-1918-07-12">London Gazette, issue 30793 published on 12 July 1918. Page 11 of 68</ref> and was [Sheriff of Monmouthshire](/source/Sheriff_of_Monmouthshire) in 1923.
