# Richard Harbert Smith

**Richard Harbert Smith** (15 January 1894, [Dillsboro](/source/Dillsboro,_Indiana), [Indiana](/source/Indiana) – 6 July 1957, [Alexandria](/source/Alexandria,_Virginia), [Virginia](/source/Virginia)) was a professor and researcher of [aeronautical engineering](/source/Aeronautical_engineering) at the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology), from 1929 to 1945.[3]

His academic education was developed at the [Moores Hill](/source/Moores_Hill,_Indiana) College ([BS](/source/Bachelor's_degree), 1915), [Indiana](/source/Indiana) (today, [University of Evansville](/source/University_of_Evansville));[4] the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology) ([SB](/source/Bachelor's_degree), 1918), [Cambridge](/source/Cambridge,_Massachusetts) ([Greater Boston](/source/Greater_Boston)), [Massachusetts](/source/Massachusetts); and the [Johns Hopkins University](/source/Johns_Hopkins_University) ([MA](/source/Master_of_Arts),[5] 1928; [PhD](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy),[1] 1929), [Baltimore](/source/Baltimore), [Maryland](/source/Maryland).

After [World War I](/source/World_War_I), Prof. Smith worked as an assistant at the [United States Naval Research Laboratory](/source/United_States_Naval_Research_Laboratory).[6] In 1929, he was an associate physicist at the Navy's laboratory when he was hired by the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](/source/MIT) as an associate professor of aeronautical engineering, being promoted to full professor in 1931.

For many years, he was Dr. [Jerome Clarke Hunsaker](/source/Jerome_Clarke_Hunsaker)'s assistant administrator for aeronautical engineering at [MIT](/source/MIT).[7]

During the [World War II](/source/World_War_II) period, Prof. Smith coordinated the [MIT](/source/MIT) [Civilian Pilot Training Program](/source/Civilian_Pilot_Training_Program)[8][9] and was also instructor for several classes of female engineering trainees for the [Curtiss](/source/Curtiss_Aeroplane_and_Motor_Company) company.

In 1945, he left [MIT](/source/MIT) to go to [Brazil](/source/Brazil), hired by the Brazilian government, in a venture led by [Casimiro Montenegro Filho](/source/Casimiro_Montenegro_Filho), then [lieutenant-colonel](/source/Lieutenant-colonel) of the [Brazilian Air Force](/source/Brazilian_Air_Force), to establish an institute of aeronautics,[10] the *[Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica](/source/Instituto_Tecnol%C3%B3gico_de_Aeron%C3%A1utica)* (Aeronautical Technology Institute), of which he became the first [rector](/source/Rector_(academia)).[11][12] This was an outstanding contribution to the scientific and technological education in [Brazil](/source/Brazil).
