**Richard Francis Talbot** (December 1710 – 12 March 1752) was a French soldier and diplomat of Irish descent.[1]

Talbot was born in France to Irish exiles, the son of Richard Talbot (son of [William Talbot](/source/William_Talbot_(died_1724))) and Charlotte Talbot (daughter of [Richard Talbot, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell](/source/Richard_Talbot%2C_1st_Earl_of_Tyrconnell)). Talbot's paternal grandfather had assumed the title of Talbot's maternal grandfather in 1691, and in 1724 Talbot became the titular [Earl of Tyrconnell](/source/Earl_of_Tyrconnell) in [Jacobite](/source/Jacobitism) circles.[1]

In 1721 he joined Fitzjames' Horse, a regiment in the [Irish Brigade](/source/Irish_Brigade_(France)) of the [French Royal Army](/source/French_Royal_Army). He was promoted to captain in 1729 and served under [James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick](/source/James_FitzJames%2C_1st_Duke_of_Berwick) in the [War of the Polish Succession](/source/War_of_the_Polish_Succession). He later served in Bavaria, Upper Alsace and Lower Rhine. Talbot was captured by British forces in a ship off the coast of [Ostend](/source/Ostend) while attempting to sail to join the [Jacobite Rising of 1745](/source/Jacobite_Rising_of_1745), but was later released in a prisoner exchange. He was appointed [Maréchal de camp](/source/Mar%C3%A9chal_de_camp) in April 1748 during the [Siege of Maastricht](/source/Siege_of_Maastricht_(1748)) and was honoured as a chevalier of the [Order of Saint Louis](/source/Order_of_Saint_Louis).[1]

After the [Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle](/source/Treaty_of_Aix-la-Chapelle_(1748)), Talbot was named by [Louis XV](/source/Louis_XV) as his ambassador to the [Kingdom of Prussia](/source/Kingdom_of_Prussia), arriving in [Berlin](/source/Berlin) in March 1750. From September 1751 his health declined rapidly and he died in Berlin in March 1752.[1]

He was described by [Thomas Carlyle](/source/Thomas_Carlyle) as "a Jacobite Irishman, of blusterous qualities, though with plenty of sagacity and rough sense".[1]
