# Richard Busk

**Richard Dawson Busk** (21 June 1895 — 24 December 1961) was an English first-class [cricketer](/source/Cricket) and [British Army](/source/British_Army) officer.

The son of Warren Gould Busk (grandson of [Wadsworth Busk](/source/Wadsworth_Busk)),[1] he was born at [Marylebone](/source/Marylebone) in June 1895. He was educated at [Marlborough College](/source/Marlborough_College), where he played cricket, [rugby](/source/Rugby_union) and [rackets](/source/Rackets_(sport)) for the college.[2] While still a schoolboy at Marlborough College, Busk played [minor counties cricket](/source/National_Counties_of_English_and_Welsh_cricket) for [Dorset](/source/Dorset_County_Cricket_Club) in the [Minor Counties Championship](/source/National_Counties_Cricket_Championship).[3] From Marlborough, he attended the [Royal Military College](/source/Royal_Military_College,_Sandhurst) and was commissioned into the [9th Queen's Royal Lancers](/source/9th_Queen's_Royal_Lancers) as a [second lieutenant](/source/Second_lieutenant#United_Kingdom_and_other_Commonwealth_countries) in December 1914, five months into the [First World War](/source/First_World_War).[4] He was promoted to [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant_(British_Army_and_Royal_Marines)) in February 1916.[5]

Following the war, he made two appearances in [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) for [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club) in 1919, against the [Australian Imperial Forces cricket team](/source/Australian_Imperial_Forces_cricket_team) and [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club). The following year, he made one first-class appearance for the [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club) (MCC) against the [British Army cricket team](/source/British_Army_cricket_team), and played for the MCC again in 1923 against [Scotland](/source/Scotland_national_cricket_team) at [Lord's](/source/Lord's).[6] In the Royal Lancers, he was promoted to [captain](/source/Captain_(British_Army_and_Royal_Marines)) in March 1921,[7] before being invalided due to ill health in March 1923.[8] Thereafter, he was employed by the [Air Ministry](/source/Air_Ministry).[2] Busk later appeared in his final first-class cricket match in 1927, for the [West of England](/source/West_of_England_cricket_team) against the touring [New Zealanders](/source/New_Zealand_national_cricket_team) at [Exeter](/source/County_Ground,_Exeter).[6] In five first-class matches, he took 11 wickets with his right-arm [fast bowling](/source/Fast_bowling) at an [average](/source/Bowling_average) of 33.18, with best figures of 4 for 60.[9] He played minor counties cricket for Dorset until 1939, making 142 appearances in the Minor Counties Championship since his debut in 1912.[3] He took 344 wickets in minor counties cricket for Dorset.[10] In later life, Busk was an officer with the Dorset [Special Constabulary](/source/Special_Constabulary), holding the rank of assistant-commandant. For his service in the Constabulary, he was awarded the [British Empire Medal](/source/British_Empire_Medal) in the [1957 New Year Honours](/source/1957_New_Year_Honours).[11] Busk died in December 1961 at [Rampisham, Dorset](/source/Rampisham).
