**Richard Angst** (23 July 1905 – 24 July 1984) was a Swiss [cinematographer](/source/Cinematographer). He became known in the late 1920s and early 1930s for his work on mountain films with [Arnold Fanck](/source/Arnold_Fanck) and later worked on a wide range of productions in Germany, including collaborations with [Fritz Lang](/source/Fritz_Lang). Over his career he was credited on numerous feature films and was recognised in 1971 with the [German Film Award](/source/German_Film_Award) for his life’s work.[1][2][3]

## Biography

Richard Angst was born in [Zürich](/source/Z%C3%BCrich), Switzerland, the son of Robert, an architect, and Elise Anna Klara Vaihinger, who came from [Pforzheim](/source/Pforzheim), Germany, where he was raised.[1][2]

In 1923 he entered film through cameraman [Sepp Allgeier](/source/Sepp_Allgeier) and became assistant to [Arnold Fanck](/source/Arnold_Fanck) on his ski and mountain films.[3] He trained with Fanck’s Berg- und Sportfilm GmbH in [Freiburg](/source/Freiburg_im_Breisgau), where he learned camera technique and film laboratory work.[2]

In the late 1920s and early 1930s he worked as one of Fanck’s chief cinematographers on mountain film classics including *[The Great Leap](/source/The_Great_Leap_(film))* (1927), *[The White Hell of Pitz Palu](/source/The_White_Hell_of_Pitz_Palu_(1929_film))* (1929), *[Storm over Mont Blanc](/source/St%C3%BCrme_%C3%BCber_dem_Mont_Blanc)* (1930), and *[The White Ecstasy](/source/The_White_Ecstasy_(film))* (1931).[2][3] He gained recognition as an independent cinematographer, particularly for his work on expeditions in Asia from 1933 onward.[3]

He also collaborated on the German-Japanese co-production *[The Daughter of the Samurai](/source/The_Daughter_of_the_Samurai)* (1936).[2] After returning to [Berlin](/source/Berlin) in 1939, Angst worked on films including *Eine kleine Nachtmusik* (1939), *Rembrandt* (1942), and *Der grosse Schatten* (1942). During this period he also worked on the anti-British drama *[My Life for Ireland](/source/My_Life_for_Ireland)* (1941), described as his only explicit [Nazi propaganda](/source/Nazi_propaganda) film.[2]

After the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War) he settled in [Ticino](/source/Ticino), Switzerland, before returning to [Berlin](/source/Berlin) in the late 1950s, where he continued his film career.[3] He was cinematographer for [Fritz Lang](/source/Fritz_Lang)’s *[The Tiger of Eschnapur](/source/The_Tiger_of_Eschnapur_(1959_film))* and *[The Indian Tomb](/source/The_Indian_Tomb_(1959_film))* (both 1959).[2] He later withdrew from the film industry in the 1960s, lamenting its decline, and in 1971 opened the restaurant “Provinz” in [Berlin-Moabit](/source/Berlin-Moabit). That same year he received the [German Film Award](/source/German_Film_Award) for his life’s work.[3]

Angst died in West Berlin on 24 July 1984.[1][2] His manuscripts, including unpublished memoirs, are held by the [Deutsche Kinemathek](/source/Deutsche_Kinemathek).[3]
