***Rhene*** is a [spider](/source/Spider) [genus](/source/Genus_(biology)) of the family [Salticidae](/source/Salticidae) (jumping spiders) whose species mostly live in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

## Taxonomy

The genus was originally named *Rhanis* by [C. L. Koch](/source/Carl_Ludwig_Koch) in 1846. However, this name had already been used for a beetle genus in 1834. Accordingly, [Tamerlan Thorell](/source/Tamerlan_Thorell) provided the [replacement name](/source/Nomen_novum) *Rhene* in 1869.[2] The name *Rhene* is derived from the Greek woman's name *[Rhene](/source/Rhene_(mythology))* (Ῥήνη).[2]

*Rhene* is a part of the subtribe Dendryphantina in the [tribe](/source/Tribe_(biology)) Dendryphantini.[3][4] [Wayne Maddison](/source/Wayne_Maddison) allocated the tribe to the [subclade](/source/Subclade) Simonida in the [clade](/source/Clade_(biology)) Saltafresia in the clade [Salticoida](/source/Salticoida).[5] It is related to the genera *[Dendryphantes](/source/Dendryphantes)* and *[Macaroeris](/source/Macaroeris)*. The genus is also similar to *[Homalattus](/source/Homalattus)*.[6] In 2017, [Jerzy Prószyński](/source/Jerzy_Pr%C3%B3szy%C5%84ski) designated it a member of a group of genera named Dendryphantines after the genus *Dendryphantes*.[7] He also noted that it is similar to the genera related to *[Simaetha](/source/Simaetha)*, a group he named Simaethines, particularly in the shape of spider's body.[8] The genus is known for its good eyesight and its high level of spatial awareness, which is likely to show that it is recent in evolutionary terms.[9]
