# Rex Armstrong

**Reginald** "**Rex**" **Armstrong** [OBE](/source/OBE) (6 December 1897 – 17 February 1968) was a [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) [international](/source/List_of_England_national_rugby_union_players)[1] [prop](/source/Prop_(rugby_union))[2] who represented [England](/source/England_national_rugby_union_team) in one international during [1925](/source/1925_Five_Nations_Championship).

Armstrong was born in [Newcastle upon Tyne](/source/Newcastle_upon_Tyne) and educated at the [Newcastle University Medical School](/source/Newcastle_University_Medical_School). He played for [Durham Medicals](/source/Medicals_RFC), Northumberland and the [Barbarians](/source/Barbarian_F.C.). During [World War II](/source/World_War_II) he served with the [RAMC](/source/RAMC) and was awarded the [OBE](/source/OBE) in 1944.[3] In 1967 he became the first doctor to describe [Foot-and-mouth disease](/source/Foot-and-mouth_disease) in man in the UK.[4] He died in [Morpeth](/source/Morpeth,_Northumberland).

He was the grandfather of comedian and television presenter [Alexander Armstrong](/source/Alexander_Armstrong).[5]
