The '''Reuss''' ({{IPA|de-CH|ˈrɔʏs|lang|link=yes}}; {{langx|gsw-CH|label=[Swiss German](/source/Swiss_German)|Rüüss}}) is a [river](/source/river) in [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland). With a length of {{convert|164|km|mi}} and a [drainage basin](/source/drainage_basin) of {{convert|3426|km2|sqmi}}, it is the fourth largest [river in Switzerland](/source/List_of_rivers_of_Switzerland) (after the [Rhine](/source/Rhine), [Aare](/source/Aare) and [Rhône](/source/Rh%C3%B4ne)). The upper Reuss forms the main valley of the [canton of Uri](/source/canton_of_Uri). The course of the lower Reuss runs from [Lake Lucerne](/source/Lake_Lucerne) to the confluence with the Aare at [Brugg](/source/Brugg) and [Windisch](/source/Windisch%2C_Switzerland).

The Reuss is one of the four major rivers taking their source in the [Gotthard](/source/Gotthard_Massif) region, along with the [Rhine](/source/Rhine), [Ticino](/source/Ticino_(river)) and [Rhône](/source/Rh%C3%B4ne).

The Gotthardreuss rises in the [Gotthard](/source/Gotthard_Pass) massif, emerging from [Lago di Lucendro](/source/Lago_di_Lucendro) (reservoir built in 1947; elevation 2,131 m) in the [canton of Ticino](/source/canton_of_Ticino) and passing into the [canton of Uri](/source/canton_of_Uri) below the ''Brigghubel'' (1,898 m).

The Furkareuss rises east of [Furka Pass](/source/Furka_Pass) (2,429 m), early joined by the ''Blaubergbach'' (sourced by two mountain lakes on 2,649 m) and several other creeks sourced by still existing glaciers, such as ''Sidelengletscher'' (3,170 m), ''Tiefengletscher'' (3,285 m) in the north, and ''Muttengletscher'' (2,908 m) and ''Witenwassergletscher'' (2,805 m) in the south, and eventually forms the east–west valley called [Urseren](/source/Urseren), passing [Realp](/source/Realp) at halfway through the valley at 1,540 m in eastern direction until its eastern end at [Andermatt](/source/Andermatt). This source is only around 5 km away from, and on the same mountain massif as the source of the Rhône, but will ultimately lead to the opposite side of the continent.

Gotthardreuss and Furkareuss join at [Hospental](/source/Hospental) (1,446 m). Downstream of Andermatt the Reuss joins at 1,429 m the village creek ''Unteralpreuss'', finally turns to the north, and passes through the 3 km-long narrow and deep [Schöllenen Gorge](/source/Sch%C3%B6llenen_Gorge) and under the legendary [Devil's Bridge](/source/Sch%C3%B6llenen_Gorge) (1,120 m).

At [Göschenen](/source/G%C3%B6schenen) (1,057 m) it is joined by the ''Göschenerreuss'', sourced by the glaciers ''Dammagletscher'' (3,430 m) and ''Flachensteinfirn'' (3,150 m) besides several others. From here it forms the main valley of the canton of Uri, the ''Urner Reusstal'', passing below [Wassen](/source/Wassen) (840 m), [Gurtnellen](/source/Gurtnellen) (720 m), [Amsteg](/source/Amsteg) and [Silenen](/source/Silenen) (500 m), and through [Erstfeld](/source/Erstfeld) (460 m), past [Attinghausen](/source/Attinghausen) and [Altdorf](/source/Altdorf%2C_Uri) (440 m), joining the southernmost part of [Lake Lucerne](/source/Lake_Lucerne) (the ''Urnersee'') between [Flüelen](/source/Fl%C3%BCelen) and [Seedorf](/source/Seedorf%2C_Uri) (434 m). The Reuss leaves Lake Lucerne some 30 km to the north-west, at the city of [Lucerne](/source/Lucerne).

Notable bridges in Lucerne are the [Kapellbrücke](/source/Kapellbr%C3%BCcke), first built 1333, rebuilt 1993 and [Spreuerbrücke](/source/Spreuerbr%C3%BCcke), built 1408. A [needle dam](/source/needle_dam) just upstream from the [Spreuerbrücke](/source/Spreuerbr%C3%BCcke)) maintains the water level.

It receives the [Kleine Emme](/source/Kleine_Emme) from [Entlebuch](/source/Entlebuch) at [Emmen](/source/Emmen%2C_Switzerland) (432 m). From here, it flows north-east through [Buchrain](/source/Buchrain), [Root](/source/Root%2C_Switzerland), [Gisikon](/source/Gisikon) and [Honau](/source/Honau%2C_Switzerland), and downstream of Honau (402 m) leaves the [canton of Lucerne](/source/canton_of_Lucerne), now forming the border between [Aargau](/source/Aargau) and [Zug](/source/Canton_of_Zug), passing [Dietwil](/source/Dietwil) (Aargau), [Risch-Rotkreuz](/source/Risch-Rotkreuz) (Zug), [Oberrüti](/source/Oberr%C3%BCti) (Aargau) and [Sins](/source/Sins%2C_Switzerland) (Aargau), [Hünenberg](/source/H%C3%BCnenberg) (Zug) and [Mühlau](/source/M%C3%BChlau) (Aargau). It receives the [Lorze](/source/Lorze) from [Lake Zug](/source/Lake_Zug) downstream of [Maschwanden](/source/Maschwanden).

Downstream of this confluence, the Reuss forms the border between Aargau and [Zürich](/source/Canton_of_Z%C3%BCrich), passing [Merenschwand](/source/Merenschwand) (Aargau, 389 m) and [Ottenbach](/source/Ottenbach%2C_Switzerland) (Zurich, 384 m), and enters Aargau downstream of Ottenbach.

Within Aargau, the Reuss flows past [Aristau](/source/Aristau), [Jonen](/source/Jonen), [Rottenschwil](/source/Rottenschwil), [Unterlunkhofen](/source/Unterlunkhofen), [Hermetschwil-Staffeln](/source/Hermetschwil-Staffeln), here forming [Flachsee](/source/Flachsee) (380 m), and onward to [Zufikon](/source/Zufikon), [Bremgarten](/source/Bremgarten%2C_Switzerland) (370 m). The Reussbrücke at Bremgarten was first built c. 1270, first mentioned 1281 (wooden bridge rebuilt 1953–1957).

From Bremgarten, the Reuss meanders between the villages of [Eggenwil](/source/Eggenwil), [Fischbach-Göslikon](/source/Fischbach-G%C3%B6slikon), [Künten](/source/K%C3%BCnten), [Niederwil](/source/Niederwil%2C_Aargau), to [Stetten](/source/Stetten%2C_Aargau) (352 m), flowing past [Tägerig](/source/T%C3%A4gerig), [Mellingen](/source/Mellingen) (350 m), [Birrhard](/source/Birrhard) (340 m), [Mülligen](/source/M%C3%BClligen), [Birmenstorf](/source/Birmenstorf%2C_Aargau) and between [Windisch](/source/Windisch%2C_Switzerland) and [Gebenstorf](/source/Gebenstorf), finally joining the [Aare](/source/Aare) just downstream of [Brugg](/source/Brugg), at 327 m.

After the confluence the river continues as the Aare, which flows into the [Rhine](/source/Rhine) at [Koblenz](/source/Koblenz%2C_Switzerland).

===Catchment area===
The catchment area of {{convert|3426|km2|abbr=on}}<ref name=catchment/> approximately covers [Central Switzerland](/source/Central_Switzerland).

The catchment area of the upper Reuss includes almost the entire [canton of Uri](/source/canton_of_Uri) (with the exception of the [Urner Boden](/source/Urner_Boden), and in the uppermost part of the Gotthardreuss a portion of [Ticino](/source/Ticino) ([Airolo](/source/Airolo) municipality). The highest point of the [drainage basin](/source/drainage_basin) is the summit of [Dammastock](/source/Dammastock), at elevation 3,630 m.

The basin of the lower Reuss adds the catchment areas of other tributaries of [Lake Lucerne](/source/Lake_Lucerne) as well as that of the [Kleine Emme](/source/Kleine_Emme), including most of [Nidwalden](/source/Nidwalden) and [Obwalden](/source/Obwalden), and parts of [Schwyz](/source/canton_of_Schwyz), [Lucerne](/source/canton_of_Lucerne) and [Zug](/source/canton_of_Zug). Downstream of Lucerne, further tributaries add other parts of Zug as well as parts of [Zürich](/source/canton_of_Z%C3%BCrich) and [Aargau](/source/Aargau).

==History==

===Name===
[Ptolemy](/source/Ptolemy) records the river's pre-Germanic name as ''Silana'' (whence the name of [Silenen](/source/Silenen)).<ref>Reichert (1968): "zur Zeit des P. hatte für die Reuß noch ihr vorgerm. Name, ''Silana'', gegolten (1, 240ff.; 2, 145ff.)."</ref>
The Germanic name is attested as ''Rusa'', ''Rusia'' from the 9th century (sometimes recorded as ''Ursa'' in the Early Modern period, cf. ''[Urseren](/source/Urseren)''),<ref name=Reichert>H. Reichert, "Riousiaoua" in Hoops (ed.), ''Reallexikon der germanischen Altertumskunde'' 25 (1968), [https://books.google.com/books?id=j7cXiqNmd1EC&pg=PA27 p. 27].</ref> from an early Germanic ''*Rūsi'', oblique ''*Rūsjō-''.

Greule (1982) interprets the name as an [Old European hydronym](/source/Old_European_hydronym), directly cognate with ''[Riß](/source/Riss_(river))''.<ref>Greule, Albrecht, '' Riusiava, Riß und Reuß'', Blätter für Oberdeutsche Namenforschung, 19 (1982).

===Upper Reuss===
Until the 13th century, the [Schöllenen Gorge](/source/Sch%C3%B6llenen_Gorge) was impassable, separating [Urseren](/source/Urseren) from Uri. Urseren was accessible via [Furka](/source/Furka_Pass) and [Oberalp](/source/Oberalp_Pass), and was under the influence of the [bishopric of Chur](/source/bishopric_of_Chur).

The main settlement area of Uri was the plain of the Reuss estuary [Altdorf](/source/Altdorf%2C_Uri) (''Reussebene''). Settlements tended to form on either side of the river, while the river itself was often taken as communal or parish boundary.<ref name=HLS>{{HLS|8771|Reuss|author=Anne-Marie Dubler, Hans Stadler|date=2011}}</ref>

The Schöllenen Gorge was made passable the 1230s, opening access to the [Gotthard Pass](/source/Gotthard_Pass). This resulted in an immense increase of the strategic value of the Reuss valley, as reflected in the grant of [imperial immediacy](/source/imperial_immediacy) to Uri and the wider political backdrop of the [foundation of the Old Swiss Confederacy](/source/foundation_of_the_Old_Swiss_Confederacy).

The Reuss was [canalised](/source/River_engineering) between Attinghausen and Altdorf in 1850–1863, and to the river mouth in 1900–1912, significantly increasing the arable land in the Reuss plain. A small river delta was reconstructed in 1985. After flooding in 1987, improved [flood control](/source/flood_control) measures were constructed during 1995–1999.

A small hydroelectric plant was built in Schöllenen Gorge for the construction of the [Gotthard Tunnel](/source/Gotthard_Tunnel) in 1875. Larger hydroelectric plants were built at Amsteg (1922), Wassen (1949) and Göschenen (1962).

===Lower Reuss===
The lower Reuss flows along a series of former glacial lakes. Settlements along the river were built on lateral [moraine](/source/moraine)s, while the river bed itself was marshy and subject to flooding, and thus unsuitable for settlement. The oldest river crossings are along terminal moraines between the former glacial lakes.

The Reuss valley was under [Habsburg](/source/House_of_Habsburg) [Austrian](/source/Duchy_of_Austria) rule during the 14th century.

In the 15th century, the Reuss became the border between territories of the [Swiss Confederacy](/source/Old_Swiss_Confederacy), in 1429 between Lucerne and Zürich, and later between Zug, Zürich and the [Freie Ämter](/source/Freie_%C3%84mter) condominium, between Freie Ämter and [Baden](/source/County_of_Baden), and between Baden and Berne. The Reuss downstream of [Ottenbach](/source/Ottenbach) came to lie within [Aargau](/source/Aargau) with the creation of this canton in 1803.

The Reuss had the status of "imperial road" (''freie Reichsstrasse'') in the late medieval period. Until 1798, it was the responsibility of cantonal authorities (the ''Reussherren'' of Lucerne and Zug) to keep the river navigable. The river was important as [waterway](/source/waterway) for traffic between Lucerne and [Zurzach](/source/Zurzach), and via Aare and Rhine to [Basel](/source/Basel), until the construction of transit roads in the 18th century. River crossings by ferry in the medieval period were at [Lunkhofen](/source/Unterlunkhofen) (mentioned 1160), Windisch, Sins, Mühlau, Oberrüti, and Dietwil. The crossing at Lunkhofen was on the main route from Zürich to Berne. Bridges across the Reuss were in Lucerne, Bremgarten (1230), Mellingen (mentioned 1253) and Gisikon (1432). In 1528, the Catholic cantons blocked the trade routes across the Reuss for Protestant cantons and trade between Zürich and Berne was re-routed through Windisch.<ref name=HLS/>

Because ferries and bridges were a source of income, the construction of new crossings was opposed during the early modern period, and only one new bridge was built, commissioned by Zug, at Sins (1640). New bridges were built only after the collapse of the Old Swiss Confederacy, e.g. at Windisch (1799), Ottenbach (1864) and Mühlau (1940).

By the end of the 20th century, there were more than a dozen crossings of the lower Reuss, including a number of railway and motorway bridges.

Projects for canalisation in 1648 ([Hans Conrad Gyger](/source/Hans_Conrad_Gyger)) and 1809 ([Johann Gottfried Tulla](/source/Johann_Gottfried_Tulla)) were not realised.

In 1840, Aargau constructed some canalisation, with limited impact. A large-scale project of river engineering was completed during 1971–1985 (''Reusstalsanierung''). The hydroelectric plant at Bremgarten-Zufikon was built in 1893 and enlarged in 1975 ([Flachsee](/source/Flachsee) reservoir).
