**Retraining of Racehorses** (**RoR**) is a national [animal welfare](/source/Animal_welfare) organization in the United Kingdom. It was established by the [British Horseracing Authority](/source/British_Horseracing_Authority) in 2000 and is a [registered charity](/source/Charitable_organization) under English and Scottish law.[1][2] It is the official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing through [injury](/source/Racehorse_injuries), old age or a lack of ability.[3] It is based at the [National Horseracing Museum](/source/National_Horseracing_Museum) in Newmarket.[4]

## Activity

RoR performs the following actions:

- Raises money to support the retraining and rehoming of former [racehorses](/source/Racehorse)

- Provides facilities for the care, retraining and rehoming of former [racehorses](/source/Racehorse)

- Raises the profile of racehorses to other equestrian activities

- Operates education programmes to ensure handlers are adequately trained to care for the horses

RoR facilitates revenue grants and funds centre improvements and property purchases for four retraining centres:[5]

- Greatwood Caring for Retired Racehorses[6]

- HEROS (Homing Ex-racehorses Organisation Scheme)[7]

- Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre[8]

- Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre[9]

- Darley Stud Management[10]

In 2009, [Princess Haya](/source/Haya_bint_Hussein) became RoR's first Patron.[11] Other patrons include [Frankie Dettori](/source/Frankie_Dettori), [Clare Balding](/source/Clare_Balding) and [Richard Johnson](/source/Richard_Johnson_(jockey)).

## Notable horses

Among the horses helped by the charity are the [Champion Hurdler](/source/Champion_Hurdle) [Make A Stand](/source/Make_A_Stand) and the [Grand National](/source/Grand_National) winners [Royal Athlete](/source/Royal_Athlete) and [Bindaree](/source/Bindaree).[12]

One graduate of the scheme is Summon Up Theblood who represented Brazil in the [Three-day Event](/source/Eventing) at the [2016 Summer Olympics](/source/2016_Summer_Olympics).[13]
