Type of forest in eastern Brazil

For the municipality in Brazil's São Paulo state, see [Restinga, São Paulo](/source/Restinga%2C_S%C3%A3o_Paulo).

Restinga habitat, São Paulo state

**Restingas** (Portuguese pronunciation: [\[ʁesˈtʃĩɡɐ\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Portuguese)) are a distinct type of coastal [tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forest](/source/Tropical_and_subtropical_moist_broadleaf_forests) in eastern [Brazil](/source/Brazil).[1] They form on sandy, acidic, and nutrient-poor soils, and are characterized by medium-sized [trees](/source/Tree) and [shrubs](/source/Shrubs) adapted to the drier and nutrient-poor conditions.[1] One of the most notable restingas is the [Restinga da Marambaia](/source/Restinga_da_Marambaia) (in [Rio de Janeiro](/source/Rio_de_Janeiro)), which is owned and kept by the [Brazilian Army](/source/Army_of_Brazil).

## Ecoregions

The [World Wildlife Fund](/source/World_Wildlife_Fund) distinguishes two *Restinga* [ecoregions](/source/Ecoregion).

- [Atlantic Coast restingas](/source/Atlantic_Coast_restingas) — found in several enclaves along Brazil's east coast from [Rio Grande do Norte](/source/Rio_Grande_do_Norte) state in northeastern Brazil to [Rio Grande do Sul](/source/Rio_Grande_do_Sul) state in southern Brazil, covering an area of 7,900 square kilometers (3,100 sq mi) that extends from the tropics to the subtropics. Its flora and fauna shares affinities with the humid [Atlantic forest](/source/Atlantic_forest) of eastern Brazil.

- [Northeastern Brazil restingas](/source/Northeastern_Brazil_restingas) — found along the northern coast of Brazil, in [Maranhão](/source/Maranh%C3%A3o), [Piauí](/source/Piau%C3%AD), and [Ceará](/source/Cear%C3%A1) states. Its flora and fauna are distinct from that of the Atlantic Coast *restingas*, with greater affinities to the moist forests of the [Amazon biome](/source/Amazon_biome).
