# Researcher Ridge

**Researcher Ridge** is an underwater [ridge](/source/Ridge) in the [Northern Atlantic Ocean](/source/Northern_Atlantic_Ocean). It appears to be a chain of seamounts named *Gollum Seamount*, *Vayda Seamount*, *Bilbo Seamount*, *Gandalf Seamount*, *The Shire Seamount*, *Pippin Seamount*, *Merry Seamount*, *Molodezhnaya Seamount*, *Frodo Seamount*, *Sam Seamount* and *Mount Doom Seamount* that were likely formed by a [hotspot](/source/Hotspot_(geology)).

## Names

In 1974, the [United States Board on Geographic Names](/source/United_States_Board_on_Geographic_Names) formally approved the name Researcher Ridge in honor of [NOAAS *Researcher*](/source/NOAAS_Researcher_(R_103)), a [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration](/source/National_Oceanic_and_Atmospheric_Administration) [oceanographic](/source/Oceanography) [research ship](/source/Research_ship) which discovered the ridge in 1971.[1][2] Vayda Seamount is named after a Russian research vessel, *Vayda*, and the name of Molodezhnaya ([Russian](/source/Russian_language) for "Youth") Seamount refers to young scientists aboard *Vayda*.[3] The ridge's other seamounts are named after characters and locations in the fantasy novel *[The Lord of the Rings](/source/The_Lord_of_the_Rings)*.

## Geography and geomorphology

Researcher Ridge lies in the [Atlantic Ocean](/source/Atlantic_Ocean) on the western side of the [Mid-Atlantic Ridge](/source/Mid-Atlantic_Ridge), just south of the [Fifteen-Twenty fracture zone](/source/Fifteen-Twenty_fracture_zone).[4] The Mid-Atlantic Ridge lies about 300 kilometres (162 nmi; 186 mi) east of Researcher Ridge.[5]

The ridge is a chain of individual [seamounts](/source/Seamount). It is about 400 kilometres (216 nmi; 249 mi) long with an east-southeast-to-west-northwest [strike](/source/Strike_and_dip) and its minimum depth decreases eastward to 800 metres (2,625 ft), concordant with mean water depth.[6] The individual seamounts that make up the ridge are, from east to west, Gollum Seamount, Vayda Seamount, Bilbo Seamount, Gandalf Seamount, The Shire Seamount, Pippin Seamount, Merry Seamount, Molodezhnaya Seamount, Frodo Seamount, Sam Seamount, and Mount Doom Seamount.[7] Small [cones](/source/Conical_hill) occur on the surface of Vayda Seamount,[8] which rises to a depth of about 400 metres (1,312 ft) below sea level;[5] many of these seamounts appear to be [guyots](/source/Guyot).[9] Only Bilbo Seamount and Vayda Seamount show clear evidence of once having been emerged islands.[5]

## Geology

A number of explanations have been forwarded to explain the existence of this ridge, from [hotspots](/source/Hotspot_(geology)) fed by a [mantle plume](/source/Mantle_plume) over the presence of [enriched](/source/Enrichment_factor) [mantle](/source/Mantle_(geology)) to the activity of the [triple junction](/source/Triple_junction) between [Africa](/source/Africa), [North America](/source/North_America), and [South America](/source/South_America).[10] A hotspot origin is considered to be the most likely explanation; according to this theory a [mantle plume](/source/Mantle_plume) built Researcher Ridge until the hotspot was "captured" by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.[11] A well-known section of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that has erupted enriched rocks lies between [14](/source/14_degrees_North) and [15](/source/15_degrees_North) degrees North[12] and also features the Logatchev [hydrothermal](/source/Hydrothermal) field.[13]

The [oceanic crust](/source/Oceanic_crust) underlying Researcher Ridge has an age ranging between 20 million and 40 million years, increasing westwards.[6] An *en echelon* [graben](/source/Graben) named [Researcher Trough](/source/Researcher_Trough) lies north of Researcher Ridge.[5]

### Composition

Rock samples obtained from the seamounts have yielded [basaltic](/source/Basalt) [cobbles](/source/Cobble_(geology)), [manganese](/source/Manganese) crusts, [reefal](/source/Reef) [limestone](/source/Limestone) and [scoria](/source/Scoria),[14] as well as [foraminifera](/source/Foraminifera) [sand](/source/Sand),[15] [hyaloclastite](/source/Hyaloclastite) and [palagonite](/source/Palagonite). [Volcanic rocks](/source/Volcanic_rock) sampled at two seamounts contain [phenocrysts](/source/Phenocryst) of [clinopyroxene](/source/Clinopyroxene), [olivine](/source/Olivine), and [plagioclase](/source/Plagioclase), and further contain [calcite](/source/Calcite), [clay](/source/Clay), [iddingsite](/source/Iddingsite), and [pyroxene](/source/Pyroxene). Aside from one [rhyolite](/source/Rhyolite) they are classified as an [ocean island basalt](/source/Ocean_island_basalt) suite with [alkali basalt](/source/Alkali_basalt) and [tholeiite](/source/Tholeiite) components.[16]

## Biology

[Corals](/source/Coral), [crustaceans](/source/Crustacean), [golden corals](/source/Golden_coral),[17] [hydrozoans](/source/Hydrozoan),[18] [seastars](/source/Seastar) and [silica](/source/Silica) [sponges](/source/Sponge) have been found on Researcher Ridge.[17]

## Eruption history

Most seamounts are probably about as old as the [seafloor](/source/Seabed) underlying them,[9] but [argon-argon dating](/source/Argon-argon_dating) on Frodo Seamount has yielded an age of 28.75 ± 0.14 million years[19] and a more questionable age of 3.44 ± 0.77 million years ago has been obtained on Molodezhnaya Seamount that may reflect [rejuvenated volcanism](/source/Rejuvenated_stage_volcanism).[20] Fresh [lava flows](/source/Lava_flow) sampled from Molodezhnaya Seamount[9] and [earthquakes](/source/Earthquake) recorded along the ridge suggest that [volcanic activity](/source/Volcanic_activity) may still be ongoing.[6]
