**Replit** ([/ˈrɛplɪt/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English)), formerly **Repl.it**, is an American technology company. Founded in 2016, Replit developed an [online integrated development environment](/source/Online_integrated_development_environment) (IDE) also named Replit that supports various programming languages.[1] In September 2024, it released the first version of Replit Agent, an [AI agent](/source/AI_agent) for automating [software development](/source/Software_development), with which users can interact in natural language.[2]

## History

In 2009, having seen significant advancements in browser and web technologies, [Masad](/source/Amjad_Masad) imagined a development environment built on the same premise as [Google Docs](/source/Google_Docs); that is, allowing the user to write and share code all in a web browser. In 2011, he produced an early [open-source](/source/Open-source) version of this concept, called "JSRepl".[3][4] Because [Masad](/source/Amjad_Masad) then spent a few years working at various companies,[1] including [Udacity](/source/Udacity) and [Codecademy](/source/Codecademy), JSRepl was used for the in-browser tutorials of [Udacity](/source/Udacity) and [Codecademy](/source/Codecademy).[4][5]

Replit was founded in 2016 by [Jordanian](/source/Jordan) [programmers](/source/Programmers) [Amjad Masad](/source/Amjad_Masad), Faris Masad, and designer Haya Odeh.[6][7] It was incorporated in [San Mateo](/source/San_Mateo%2C_California).[8][9] Its name comes from the acronym REPL, which stands for "[read–evaluate–print loop](/source/Read%E2%80%93eval%E2%80%93print_loop)". Initially a collaborative coding platform, Replit became with Agent an AI-powered software creation ecosystem centered around the ability to build complete applications by describing them in natural language.

In July 2025, Replit announced a partnership with [Microsoft](/source/Microsoft) to integrate its development platform with [Microsoft's](/source/Microsoft) enterprise tools, including the [Azure](/source/Microsoft_Azure) cloud infrastructure, making Replit's services available through the Azure Marketplace.[10] That same month, Replit's [AI agent](/source/AI_agent) went "rogue" and deleted a client company's entire database during a [code freeze](/source/Code_freeze), against the prompter's wishes.[11] This incident earned a nomination in the 2025 [AI Darwin Awards](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=AI_Darwin_Awards&action=edit&redlink=1).[12]
