'''RenderX, Inc''' is a commercial software development company that provides standards-based software products, used for typeset-quality electronic and print output of business content. RenderX develops products that convert [XML](/source/XML) content into printable formats such as [PDF](/source/PDF), [PostScript](/source/PostScript) and [AFP](/source/IBM_Advanced_Function_Printing_(AFP)).

== History ==

RenderX started as a company to promote [open standard](/source/open_standard)s in general and [XSL-FO](/source/XSL_Formatting_Objects) in particular, participating in a contest announced by [Sun](/source/Sun_Microsystems) and [Adobe](/source/Adobe_Systems).<ref>[http://news.cnet.com/2100-1023-222786.html Sun, Adobe offer bounty for XSL]</ref>{{failed verification|date=May 2016}} Later the contest was cancelled but the company decided to proceed anyway.{{citation needed|date=May 2016}}

== Contribution to XSL-FO community ==

The company has devised a [DTD](/source/Document_Type_Definition) for XSL-FO documents<ref>{{cite book

== Products ==

RenderX's main product is a [Java](/source/Java_(programming_language))-based [XSL-FO](/source/XSL_Formatting_Objects) formatting engine called XEP, which converts XSL-FO documents to printable form (PDF or PostScript). XEP is free for academic and personal use.

XEP conforms to [Extensible Stylesheet Language](/source/Extensible_Stylesheet_Language) (XSL), a W3C recommendation. It also supports a subset of the [Scalable Vector Graphics](/source/Scalable_Vector_Graphics) (SVG).<ref>{{cite web |title=XEP Engine |url=https://www.renderx.com/tools/xep.html |website=RenderX |access-date=2026-04-22}}</ref>
