**Reja** is a Spanish term for [grillwork](/source/Grillwork). It typically refers to iron screens, often of a decorative nature.[1]

In medieval times the word was used for [ploughshare](/source/Ploughshare). It is used in this sense in the [Becerro Galicano](/source/Becerro_Galicano).

## Domestic rejas

In a domestic context, *rejas* usually refers to window [grilles](/source/Grille_(architecture)). They played a role in Spanish courtship rituals,[2] and are referenced by Granados in *[Goyescas](/source/Goyescas)* where the composer depicts a romantic dialogue between lovers.

## Ecclesiastical rejas

Inside cathedrals, fences were often placed in front of [side chapels](/source/Side_chapel), the [choir](/source/Choir_(architecture)), or even in [rood screens](/source/Rood_screen) in front of the [altar](/source/Altar). [1][3] Such *reja*s are commonly 25 to 30 ft (7.5 to 9 meters) high.[3]

Crafters who made rejas were known as rejeros, or reja-makers.[4]
