# Reinhard Goebel

**Reinhard Goebel** (ˈɡøːbəl; born 31 July 1952 in [Siegen](/source/Siegen), [West Germany](/source/West_Germany)) is a German [conductor](/source/Conducting) and [violinist](/source/Baroque_violin) specialising in [early music](/source/Early_music) on [authentic instruments](/source/Historically_informed_performance) and professor for historical performance at the [Mozarteum](/source/Mozarteum) in Salzburg.[citation needed] He founded the ensemble [Musica Antiqua Köln](/source/Musica_Antiqua_K%C3%B6ln) in 1973.[1] Since 2018, he has led the Berlin Baroque Soloists.[2]

Goebel received his first violin lessons at the age of twelve. He studied the violin with [Franzjosef Maier](/source/Franzjosef_Maier), the leader of the [Collegium Aureum](/source/Collegium_Aureum), [Saschko Gawriloff](/source/Saschko_Gawriloff), an expert in difficult modern scores, and [baroque violinists](/source/Baroque_violin) [Marie Leonhardt](/source/Marie_Leonhardt) in The Hague and [Eduard Melkus](/source/Eduard_Melkus) in Vienna.

In 1973, Goebel founded his early music ensemble [Musica Antiqua Köln](/source/Musica_Antiqua_K%C3%B6ln) that he led until its dissolution in 2007. He has been an important figure in early music and, for example, was instrumental in rediscovering the music of composers such as [Marc-Antoine Charpentier](/source/Marc-Antoine_Charpentier) and the Dresden court composers [Johann David Heinichen](/source/Johann_David_Heinichen) and [Jan Dismas Zelenka](/source/Jan_Dismas_Zelenka).
