**Reignfire** is a fictional character and [villain](/source/Villain) appearing in [American comic books](/source/American_comic_book) published by [Marvel Comics](/source/Marvel_Comics). The character primarily appeared in the series *[X-Force](/source/X-Force_(comic_book))*. His original creators were [Fabian Nicieza](/source/Fabian_Nicieza) and Matt Broome, who had completely different plans for the villain than what evolved.

## Publication history

Originally, Fabian Nicieza intended for Reignfire to be a [time traveling](/source/Time_travel), slightly older, more mentally disturbed version of Sunspot.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] When writer [John Francis Moore](/source/John_Francis_Moore_(writer)) took over the title *[X-Force](/source/X-Force_(comic_book))*, he changed the original plan and made Sunspot a protoplasmic entity who took Sunspot's form.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Fictional character biography

Following the events of "[X-Cutioner's Song](/source/X-Cutioner's_Song)", the members of the [Mutant Liberation Front](/source/Mutant_Liberation_Front) (MLF) are imprisoned and left without a leader. Reignfire frees MLF members [Forearm](/source/Forearm_(comics)), [Reaper](/source/Reaper_(Marvel_Comics)), [Wildside](/source/Wildside_(comics)), and [Tempo](/source/Tempo_(character)) from prison and recruits [Moonstar](/source/Danielle_Moonstar) and [Locus](/source/Locus_(comics)) into the group. He tasks the group with killing [Henry Peter Gyrich](/source/Henry_Peter_Gyrich), an anti-[mutant](/source/Mutant_(Marvel_Comics)) government liaison. However, their attempt is foiled by [X-Force](/source/X-Force). During the battle, Locus and [Sunspot](/source/Sunspot_(Marvel_Comics)) are teleported away after their powers inadvertently react with one another.

During a later battle, Reignfire removes his mask and reveals himself to be the missing Sunspot.[1] Cable uses his [telepathy](/source/Telepathy) to suppress the Reignfire persona in Sunspot, which inadvertently gives Sunspot knowledge of [Askani](/source/Askani)—Cable's religion and language.[*[volume and issue needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)*]

Sunspot goes to visit his friend and former [New Mutants](/source/New_Mutants) teammate [Skids](/source/Skids_(character)) in [Colorado](/source/Colorado) when the pair are attacked by Locus and Reignfire. Reignfire reveals that he was originally a [protoplasmic](/source/Protoplasm) entity in the possession of the [Celestials](/source/Celestial_(comics)) who gained Sunspot's appearance and powers after being given a sample of his blood by [Gideon](/source/Gideon_(comics)). While close to Sunspot, Reignfire is able to telepathically link with him and manipulate his actions.[2][3]

Reignfire later appears back on the Celestials' ship, which is attacked by X-Force. After a battle, Reignfire is crushed to death by a Celestial [golem](/source/Golem).[4]

## Powers and abilities

As a clone of Sunspot, Reignfire shared all of his abilities: absorption rechanneling of solar energy, either within his own body or externally, to create multiple abilities including, super strength, [thermal updrafts](/source/Vertical_draft) for flight, projection of heat and light as [concussive](/source/Concussion) blasts or in a stream of fiery rain, and the ability to forge a [telepathic link](/source/Telepathy) with his genetic host and psychically imprint himself onto his brain.
