Cashman attended [Quinnipiac University](/source/Quinnipiac_University), where he was a standout defenseman for the [Quinnipiac Bobcats men's ice hockey](/source/Quinnipiac_Bobcats_men's_ice_hockey) team, recording 23 goals and 125 assists for 148 points in 151 career games with the Bobcats. Upon graduation, Cashman was signed by the [Toronto Maple Leafs](/source/Toronto_Maple_Leafs) of the [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League),[{{cite web|url=http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=460919|title=Leafs Sign All-American Reid Cashman|website=NHL.com}}] and was assigned to play with their [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) (AHL) affiliate, the [Toronto Marlies](/source/Toronto_Marlies).
