# Reg Hackett

**Reginald Lawrence Hackett** (1891–1967) was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played at [left-half](/source/Left-half) for [Southampton](/source/Southampton_F.C.) during [the 1919–20 season](/source/1919%E2%80%9320_in_English_football).

## Football career

Hackett was born in [Cradley Heath](/source/Cradley_Heath) and started his football career with [Blackheath Town](/source/Blackheath_Town_F.C.), where he had gained two England junior international caps against Ireland and Scotland.[1] In 1919, he was spotted by [Southampton](/source/Southampton_F.C.)'s trainer, [Jimmy McIntyre](/source/Jimmy_McIntyre), who had been working in [Coventry](/source/Coventry) during the [First World War](/source/First_World_War) and, along with two teammates (including [outside-left](/source/Outside-left) [Fred Foxall](/source/Fred_Foxall)) was signed in time for the [1919–20](/source/Southern_Football_League_1919-20) [Southern League](/source/Southern_Football_League) season.[1]

Hackett made his debut for the "Saints" in the opening match of the season, a 1–1 draw at [The Dell](/source/The_Dell_(Southampton)) against [Exeter City](/source/Exeter_City_F.C.) on 30 August. Described as a "*consistent performer*",[1] Hackett retained his place at [left-half](/source/Left-half), rarely missing a match until early March, when an injury led to him missing most of the rest of the season, with [Bill Turner](/source/Bill_Turner_(footballer,_born_1894)) replacing him.[2]

In the summer of 1920, after 31 League and two [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) matches, Hackett left the club and returned to [Birmingham](/source/Birmingham), where he later played in the [Birmingham League](/source/West_Midlands_(Regional)_League).[1]
