At the time of Sawyer's attendance at the school, it was located in [Sterling, Massachusetts](/source/Sterling%2C_Massachusetts). Since before the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War), the building had served as a barn for a local [Baptist Church](/source/Baptist_Church) [parsonage](/source/parsonage).
