The **Redeye River** is a [tributary](/source/Tributary) of the [Leaf River](/source/Leaf_River_(Minnesota)), 73 miles (117 km) long, in central [Minnesota](/source/Minnesota) in the [United States](/source/United_States). Via the Leaf and [Crow Wing](/source/Crow_Wing_River) Rivers, it is part of the [watershed](/source/Drainage_basin) of the [Mississippi River](/source/Mississippi_River), draining an area of 222 square miles (570 km2) in a rural region. The river's name comes from the Native Americans of the area, who saw many red-eye fish in the river.[4]

## Geography

The Redeye River rises in a [morainic](/source/Moraine) region,[5] issuing from Wolf Lake in [Toad Lake Township](/source/Toad_Lake_Township,_Minnesota) in southeastern [Becker County](/source/Becker_County,_Minnesota). It flows generally southeastwardly through northeastern [Otter Tail](/source/Otter_Tail_County,_Minnesota) and central [Wadena](/source/Wadena_County,_Minnesota) Counties, through the city of [Sebeka](/source/Sebeka,_Minnesota), and enters the Leaf River in [Bullard Township](/source/Bullard_Township,_Minnesota) in southeastern Wadena County,[6] 8 miles (13 km) upstream of the Leaf River's mouth at the Crow Wing River.[1] The river's course is within the North [Central Hardwood Forest](/source/Central_Hardwood_Forest) [ecoregion](/source/Ecoregion), which is characterized by [hardwood](/source/Hardwood) forests of [maple](/source/Maple) and [basswood](/source/Tilia) mixed with [conifers](/source/Conifer), on [outwash plains](/source/Outwash_plain) and moraines amid flat [glacial lakes](/source/Glacial_lake).[7]
