He was born in [Canada](/source/Canada) in 1896, but he moved to Britain where he directed his first film ''[The Spare Room](/source/The_Spare_Room)'' in 1932. He worked mainly at [Twickenham Studios](/source/Twickenham_Studios) in west [London](/source/London). In 1937 he directed ''[Underneath the Arches](/source/Underneath_the_Arches_(film))'' his most successful film.
