# Red acouchi

The **red acouchi** (***Myoprocta acouchy***), is a species of [rodent](/source/Rodent) in the [acouchi](/source/Acouchi) genus, part of the family [Dasyproctidae](/source/Dasyproctidae). It is found in the [Guyanese](/source/Guyana) subregion of the [Amazon biome](/source/Amazon_biome), including [Guyana](/source/List_of_mammals_of_Guyana), [Suriname](/source/List_of_mammals_of_Suriname), [French Guiana](/source/List_of_mammals_of_French_Guiana), and [Brazil](/source/List_of_mammals_of_Brazil), east of the [Rio Branco](/source/Branco_River) and mainly north of the [Amazon](/source/Amazon_River), with a few records from south of the Amazon. In the past, some authors have applied the name *M. acouchy* to the [green acouchi](/source/Green_acouchi) instead and used *M. exilis* for the red acouchi, but this is now obsolete.[1]

It not only hoards seeds, but also chews off the protruding sprouts to prevent germination.[2][3]
