**Red Slate Mountain** is a summit in the [Sierra Nevada](/source/Sierra_Nevada_(U.S.)). It lies along the [Sierra Crest](/source/Sierra_Crest) that divides [Fresno County](/source/Fresno_County%2C_California) from [Mono County, California](/source/Mono_County%2C_California).

Red Slate Mountain can be reached by scrambling either from [McGee Pass](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=McGee_Pass&action=edit&redlink=1), or starting from [Bighorn Lake](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bighorn_Lake_(California)&action=edit&redlink=1).

The area to the north of Red Slate Mountain is among the most seismically active in California which is associated with the [Long Valley Caldera](/source/Long_Valley_Caldera).

Red Slate Mountain was named by the [California Geological Survey](/source/California_Geological_Survey), in 1873. However, it is not clear whether the survey meant to name this peak, or [Red and White Mountain](/source/Red_and_White_Mountain).[5]
