A native of [Richburg, South Carolina](/source/Richburg%2C_South_Carolina), he was the older brother of [Marty Marion](/source/Marty_Marion), the longtime star [shortstop](/source/shortstop) of the [St. Louis Cardinals](/source/St._Louis_Cardinals) and former big league skipper.

While Marty played 13 years in the Major Leagues, Red Marion played in only 18 big-league games — four in [1935](/source/1935_in_baseball) and the remainder in [1943](/source/1943_in_baseball) — all for the [Washington Senators](/source/Washington_Senators_(1901%E2%80%9360)). A right-handed batter and thrower, he collected five [hits](/source/hit_(baseball)) in 26 [at-bats](/source/at_bat), for a .179 [batting average](/source/batting_average_(baseball)). He had one [double](/source/Double_(baseball)), one [home run](/source/home_run) and two [runs batted in](/source/run_batted_in).

But he would spend 19 seasons as a manager at the minor league level, beginning in 1940 with the [Newport Canners](/source/Newport_Canners) of the Class D [Appalachian League](/source/Appalachian_League). He spent ten years (1946–55) as a pilot in the [Boston Red Sox](/source/Boston_Red_Sox) organization, beginning with the [Oneonta Red Sox](/source/Oneonta_Red_Sox) of the Class C [Canadian–American League](/source/Canadian%E2%80%93American_League) and ending with the [Triple-A](/source/Triple-A_(baseball)) [Louisville Colonels](/source/Louisville_Colonels_(minor_league_baseball)) of the [American Association](/source/American_Association_(20th_century)). In 1956 he remained at the Louisville helm for a final half-season, even though the Red Sox no longer sponsored the Colonels. He also managed in the [farm system](/source/farm_system)s of the Senators and [Los Angeles Angels](/source/Los_Angeles_Angels), before retiring after the 1963 campaign.

His career minor league managing record was 1,352 victories and 1,224 defeats, a winning percentage of .525.

In 1975, Red Marion died the day before his 61st birthday in [San Jose, California](/source/San_Jose%2C_California), where he had managed Red Sox and Angels farm teams in the 1950s and 1960s.
