A '''Red Envelope Club''' ({{zh|t=紅包場|hp=hóngbāocháng|first=t}}) is a form of [cabaret](/source/cabaret) in [Taiwan](/source/Taiwan) that originated in [Taipei](/source/Taipei) in the 1960s as an imitation of Shanghai Cabaret. In these cabarets, female singers sing old Chinese songs from the 1920s to 1950s to mostly older men, many of whom were soldiers in General [Chiang Kai-shek](/source/Chiang_Kai-shek)'s [Kuomintang](/source/Kuomintang) army that fled [mainland China](/source/mainland_China) after the [Chinese Civil War](/source/Chinese_Civil_War). The cabarets get their name from the fact that the audience gives the singers, who they appreciate, money in [red envelope](/source/red_envelope)s.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/30/style/tmagazine/30taipei.html|title=Last Days of Taipei|work=The New York Times |date=30 March 2008 |access-date=2021-12-06|language=en|last1=McGray |first1=Douglas }}</ref> The remaining clubs are mostly located in the [Ximending](/source/Ximending) District of [Taipei](/source/Taipei) on Hankou Street, Emei Street, and Xining South Road.
