The **Red Bridge** in [Tasmania](/source/Tasmania) crosses the [Elizabeth River](/source/Elizabeth_River%2C_Tasmania) at [Campbell Town](/source/Campbell_Town%2C_Tasmania). Built in 1838 using [penal labour](/source/Penal_labour), it is the oldest surviving [brick](/source/Brick) [arch bridge](/source/Arch_bridge) in [Australia](/source/Australia),[1] as well as the oldest bridge anywhere on the [National Highway](/source/National_Highway_(Australia)).[2] The bridge contains three arch spans of 7.6 m (25 ft) each and holds two lanes of traffic as well as pedestrian walkways. It lies on the [Midland Highway](/source/Midland_Highway_(Tasmania)), roughly halfway between [Hobart](/source/Hobart) and [Launceston](/source/Launceston%2C_Tasmania), carrying over two million vehicles per year.

It is said to have been designed by [James Blackburn](/source/James_Blackburn_(architect)), [architect](/source/Architect) to [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne) and a convict himself.[3] It was constructed of 1,250,000 handmade bricks on dry land, and after its completion the river was diverted to flow under the bridge.[4]

The Red Bridge is registered on the [Register of the National Estate](/source/Register_of_the_National_Estate) since 1978.

The bridge received an Engineering Heritage National Marker from [Engineers Australia](/source/Engineers_Australia) as part of its [Engineering Heritage Recognition Program](/source/Engineers_Australia#Engineering_Heritage_Recognition_Program).[5]
