This species of rodent is distributed in parts of southeastern [Asia](/source/Asia), in areas of the [Red River Valley](/source/Red_River_(Asia)) of northern [Vietnam](/source/Vietnam) and southern central [Yunnan](/source/Yunnan) in [China](/source/China).<ref name=iucn/> The red-throated squirrel is [sympatric](/source/sympatric) with another member of the same genus, ''[D. rufigenis](/source/Dremomys_rufigenis)'', but lives at higher altitudes<ref name = "World"/> ({{cvt|2500|to|3000|m}} in the case of the type specimen<ref name=iucn/>).
