**Rebecca Freja Goldin** is an American mathematician who works as a professor of mathematical sciences at [George Mason University](/source/George_Mason_University)[1] and director of the [Statistical Assessment Service](/source/Statistical_Assessment_Service), a nonprofit organization associated with GMU that aims to improve the use of [statistics](/source/Statistics) in journalism.[2] Her mathematical research concerns [symplectic geometry](/source/Symplectic_geometry), including work on [Hamiltonian actions](/source/Hamiltonian_action) and [symplectic quotients](/source/Moment_map#Symplectic_quotients).[3]

## Education and career

After graduating with honors in mathematics from [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University),[4] Goldin studied in France for a year with [Bernard Teissier](/source/Bernard_Teissier) at the [École Normale Supérieure](/source/%C3%89cole_Normale_Sup%C3%A9rieure),[5] pursuing research on [toric varieties](/source/Toric_variety).[3] She completed her Ph.D. in 1999 at the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology) under the supervision of [Victor Guillemin](/source/Victor_Guillemin).[6]

After postdoctoral research at the [University of Maryland](/source/University_of_Maryland), she joined the GMU faculty in 2001.[4][5]

## Recognition

She was the inaugural winner of the [Ruth I. Michler Memorial Prize](/source/Ruth_I._Michler_Memorial_Prize) of the [Association for Women in Mathematics](/source/Association_for_Women_in_Mathematics) (AWM), in 2007.[3][5] She was also the 2008 [AWM/MAA Falconer Lecturer](/source/AWM%2FMAA_Falconer_Lecturer), speaking on "The Use and Abuse of Statistics in the Media".[7]

She was included in the 2019 class of fellows of the [American Mathematical Society](/source/American_Mathematical_Society) "for contributions to differential geometry and service to the mathematical community, particularly in support of promoting mathematical and statistical thinking to a wide audience".[8]
