'''Realm,''' formerly '''Serial Box''',<ref>{{Cite web|last=Spangler|first=Todd|date=2021-04-02|title=Serial Box Renames Itself Realm, Launches Free Podcast Strategy (EXCLUSIVE)|url=https://variety.com/2021/digital/news/serial-box-rebrand-realm-free-podcasts-1234943075/|access-date=2021-04-02|website=Variety|language=en-US}}</ref> is an American audio entertainment company that creates original fiction [podcast](/source/podcast)s and [audiobook](/source/audiobook) series, which include continuations of TV series. Realm's podcasts feature an array of production styles depending on the story, some with full casts, others with single voice narration.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|date=2021-04-02|title=Serial Box Relaunches as Realm, Releasing Dozens of Its Most Popular Shows for the First Time Everywhere Podcasts Are Available|url=https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210402005150/en/Serial-Box-Relaunches-as-Realm%C2%A0-Releasing-Dozens-of-Its-Most-Popular-Shows-for-the-First-Time%C2%A0Everywhere-Podcasts-Are-Available|access-date=2021-04-02|website=businesswire.com|language=en}}</ref> ''[NPR](/source/NPR)'' described Realm as intending to serve as an "[HBO](/source/HBO) for readers".<ref name="NPR">{{cite web |url=https://www.npr.org/2016/07/26/484171813/can-serialized-fiction-convert-binge-watchers-into-binge-readers |title=Can Serialized Fiction Convert Binge Watchers Into Binge Readers? |publisher=[NPR](/source/NPR) |date=26 July 2016 |accessdate=24 July 2019 |last=Neary |first=Lynn}}</ref>

==History==
In September 2015, Julian Yap and Molly Barton launched Serial Box.<ref name="Today">{{cite web|last=Dawn|first=Randee|date=28 September 2015|title='HBO for reading': Serial Box delivers new fiction to your phone in TV-style episodes|url=https://www.today.com/popculture/hbo-reading-serial-box-delivers-new-fiction-your-phone-bite-t45876|accessdate=24 July 2019|work=[Today](/source/Today_(American_TV_program))}}</ref> The first production was ''Bookburners'', created by [Max Gladstone](/source/Max_Gladstone).<ref name=PW>{{cite web|url=https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/digital/content-and-e-books/article/68116-startup-serial-box-wants-to-be-the-hbo-for-readers.html |title=Startup Serial Box Wants To Be the 'HBO for Readers' |work=[Publishers Weekly](/source/Publishers_Weekly) |date=18 September 2015 |accessdate=24 July 2019 |last=Reid |first=Calvin}}</ref> The writing process was based on [television serials](/source/Serial_(radio_and_television)) rather than novels.<ref name=NPR/> Founder Yap realized that he was reading fewer novels due to time constraints from work. Both Yap and Barton believe that serialized fiction will make reading more accessible and social.<ref name=Today/>

In April 2021, Serial Box changed its name to Realm and released its productions globally as podcasts.<ref name=":0" /> The productions can be listened to for free with advertising, or with a subscription.

==Process==
Realm hires a lead author, or showrunner, write a pilot episode and a "show bible" which will outline the plot for each season. After this, Realm brings together a team of writers who will contribute ideas in a manner similar to a television writers' room. At the end of this period, each author is assigned episodes to write. Whereas a novel generally takes 2–3 years to be written and published, a Realm production can be completed 6 months from the start date. Because the first episode is published before the season is completed, the authors can tailor the ending of the season to the audience's reactions.<ref name="Wired">{{cite web|url=https://www.wired.com/2016/09/serial-box-books-like-tv/ |title=THIS EBOOK PUBLISHER DOESN'T HAVE AUTHORS. IT HAS WRITERS' ROOMS |last=Locke |first=Charley |date=14 September 2016 |accessdate=24 July 2019 |work=[Wired](/source/Wired_(Magazine))}}</ref> It is the responsibility of the showrunner to ensure that all episodes maintain a consistent [writing style](/source/writing_style) despite the involvement of multiple authors.<ref name="Vox">{{cite web|url=https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/8/6/16849756/serial-box-serialized-books-peak-tv |title=Meet a new kind of book, designed for the age of Peak TV |last=Grady |first=Constance |date=6 August 2018 |accessdate=24 July 2019 |publisher=[Vox](/source/Vox_(website))}}</ref>

==Awards==
Molly Barton, Jeff Li, James Stuart, and Julian Yap were nominated for the 2019 [World Fantasy Professional Award](/source/World_Fantasy_Special_Award%E2%80%94Professional) for their work with Serial Box.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.sfadb.com/World_Fantasy_Awards_2019 |title=World Fantasy Awards 2019 |accessdate=1 Aug 2019 |publisher=SFADB}}</ref>
