# Read Island

**Read Island** is an island in [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), [Canada](/source/Canada). It is part of the [Discovery Islands](/source/Discovery_Islands) between [Vancouver Island](/source/Vancouver_Island) and the mainland, between the [Strait of Georgia](/source/Strait_of_Georgia) and [Johnstone Strait](/source/Johnstone_Strait).

## Etymology

Read Island was named around 1864 by [Daniel Pender](/source/Daniel_Pender), captain of the *[Beaver](/source/Beaver_(steamship))*, for Captain William Viner Read,[2] who was a naval assistant at the [United Kingdom Hydrographic Office](/source/United_Kingdom_Hydrographic_Office) at the time. Viner Point, the southern point of the island, was named in association.[3]

## Geography

Read Island is located between [Quadra Island](/source/Quadra_Island) and [Cortes Island](/source/Cortes_Island_(British_Columbia)),[4] southeast of [Maurelle Island](/source/Maurelle_Island) and southwest of the [Rendezvous Islands](/source/Rendezvous_Islands). Read Island is separated from Quadra Island by Hoskyn Channel, from Maurelle Island by Whiterock Channel, and from Cortes Island by [Sutil Channel](/source/Sutil_Channel). Evans Bay forms a large inlet on the east side of Read Island.

## Demographics

Read Island has a population of approximately 80 residents and is located within Electoral Area C of the [Strathcona Regional District](/source/Strathcona_Regional_District).[5] The locality of [Read Island, British Columbia](/source/Read_Island,_British_Columbia), which is a [census-designated place](/source/Designated_place), is located on the east side of the island, near its south end, at [50°11′00″N 125°05′00″W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=50_11_00_N_125_05_00_W)[1]
