Michalski was born in [Bayonne, New Jersey](/source/Bayonne%2C_New_Jersey).  He studied voice with [Rosalie Miller](/source/Rosalie_Miller) at the [Mannes School of Music](/source/Mannes_School_of_Music) in New York City before making his professional stage debut in 1959 as Nourabad in [Georges Bizet](/source/Georges_Bizet)'s ''[Les pecheurs de perles](/source/Les_pecheurs_de_perles)'' with the [Philadelphia Grand Opera Company](/source/Philadelphia_Grand_Opera_Company).
