However, he did enjoy several friendships with writers and musicians, playing the cello himself. His formal education concluded at the age of fifteen, wherein he began art studies at the [Canterbury School of Art](/source/Ilam_School_of_Fine_Arts) under the [tutelage](/source/tutelage) of Herdman Smith and Alfred Walsh.
