During his career, Hecht set five German records. His best result in international competition was a [bronze medal](/source/1998_European_Athletics_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men's_javelin_throw) at the [1998 European Championships](/source/1998_European_Athletics_Championships). At a club level, he represented [SC Magdeburg](/source/SC_Magdeburg) in former East Germany.
