**Raymond John Guth** (May 29, 1924 – December 17, 2021) was an American film, stage and television actor.

## Early years

Guth was born on May 29, 1924,[1] in [Oil City, Pennsylvania](/source/Oil_City,_Pennsylvania). He studied acting at the [Pasadena Playhouse](/source/Pasadena_Playhouse) while supporting himself [Work](/source/Work_(human_activity)) nights at a [morgue](/source/Morgue).[2]

## Career

Guth originally performed in [stage plays](/source/Play_(theatre)). In 1954 he was given an award as best actor by Theater Americana for his performance as Genesius in the play *The Comedian*.[3] He made his film debut in 1956, appearing in the film *The Flesh Merchant*.[citation needed] Guth's first credited television appearance was in 1957 in the [anthology series](/source/Anthology_series) *[Alfred Hitchcock Presents](/source/Alfred_Hitchcock_Presents)*.[2] He continued to work with [Hitchcock](/source/Alfred_Hitchcock) in film and television.[4]

Guth made guest appearances in the television shows *[Wagon Train](/source/Wagon_Train)*, *[The Virginian](/source/The_Virginian_(TV_series))*, *[Route 66](/source/Route_66_(TV_series))*, *[The High Chaparral](/source/The_High_Chaparral)*, *[Daniel Boone](/source/Daniel_Boone_(1964_TV_series))*, *[Tombstone Territory](/source/Tombstone_Territory)*, *[Rawhide](/source/Rawhide_(TV_series))* *[The Rifleman](/source/The_Rifleman)*, *[Perry Mason](/source/Perry_Mason_(1957_TV_series))*,[5] and *[Land of the Giants](/source/Land_of_the_Giants)*, and multiple appearances in *[Gunsmoke](/source/Gunsmoke#Television_series_(1955–1975)_and_TV_movies)*, *[Death Valley Days](/source/Death_Valley_Days)* and *[Bonanza](/source/Bonanza)*. He made two appearances in the [sitcom](/source/Sitcom) television series *[Hazel](/source/Hazel_(TV_series))*.[6] Guth's final appearances were in the television programs *[The Rookies](/source/The_Rookies)*, *[Happy Days](/source/Happy_Days)*, *[The Dukes of Hazzard](/source/The_Dukes_of_Hazzard)*, *[Little House on the Prairie](/source/Little_House_on_the_Prairie_(TV_series))*, *[Hart to Hart](/source/Hart_to_Hart)*, *[Moonlighting](/source/Moonlighting_(TV_series))* and *[Highway to Heaven](/source/Highway_to_Heaven)*.[7]

## Personal life

Guth died on December 17, 2021,[1] in [La Verne, California](/source/La_Verne,_California), at the age of 97.[9]
