'''Raymond Besse''' (1899–1969)<ref>Artprice</ref> was a French artist.

==Biography==
Raymond Besse was born in [Niort](/source/Niort), [Deux-Sèvres](/source/Deux-S%C3%A8vres) on December 26, 1899. He spent his childhood in the [Berry](/source/Berry_(province)) province of France.<ref>Dictionnaire des peintres à Montmartre</ref>

Raymond Besse arrived in Paris in 1916. He exhibited for the first time in the [Salon des Indépendants](/source/Salon_des_Ind%C3%A9pendants) in 1923. He then continued to exhibit his works in many other exhibitions and salons, among them the [Salon d'Automne](/source/Salon_d'Automne). Raymond Besse's favorite topic was Paris. He loved to illustrate the life in and around the capital city, especially in the northern areas of [Saint-Ouen](/source/Saint-Ouen%2C_Seine-Saint-Denis), [Montmartre](/source/Montmartre), [Clichy](/source/Clichy%2C_Hauts-de-Seine) and around the [Canal Saint-Martin](/source/Canal_Saint-Martin).<ref>Dictionnaire des peintres à Montmartre</ref>

Raymond Besse often depicted blue-collar neighborhoods of [Paris](/source/Paris), frequently under snowy or overcast conditions, which gives many of his works a somber appearance. While this style has led some critics to overlook his paintings, they provide a detailed portrayal of life in the suburbs of Paris during the early 20th century, in contrast to the more colorful and idyllic scenes created by artists such as [Édouard Cortès](/source/Edouard_Cort%C3%A8s) (1882–1969), [Antoine Blanchard](/source/Antoine_Blanchard) (1910–1988), and [Eugène Galien-Laloue](/source/Eug%C3%A8ne_Galien-Laloue) (1854–1941).{{Citation needed|date=March 2026|reason=Who are these critics?}}

The artist also painted many works about [Normandy](/source/Normandy), villages in the [Yonne](/source/Yonne) area, and landscapes around [Moret-sur-Loing](/source/Moret-sur-Loing). Raymond Besse finally moved to the Loire area at the end of his life, and he died in [Candé-sur-Beuvron](/source/Cand%C3%A9-sur-Beuvron), [Loir-et-Cher](/source/Loir-et-Cher) on March 5, 1969.<ref>Dictionnaire des peintres à Montmartre</ref>
