## Early life

Rachel Agatha Keen was born on 24 October 1997 in [Tooting](/source/Tooting), London,[1] to a [Ghanaian](/source/Ghanaian)-[Swiss](/source/Swiss_people) mother who is a mental health worker, and an English father from Yorkshire.[2] She has three younger sisters: the singer-songwriters [Absolutely](/source/Absolutely_(musician)) and [Amma](/source/Amma_(musician)), and Katelyn.[3][4] As a child, Raye frequently attended church where her mother sang in the choir and her father was the musical director.[5] Raye and her family later moved to [Croydon](/source/Croydon), where she grew up and studied at [Woodcote High School](/source/Woodcote_High_School).[1]

Surrounded by music, Raye first showed interest in becoming a recording artist at the age of eight.[6] She wrote her first song for a concert in [Year 6](/source/Year_6) and performed it at the [Southwark Cathedral](/source/Southwark_Cathedral), after her father taught her how to play the piano.[2] At age 14, Raye was chosen to enter the [BRIT School](/source/BRIT_School), where she studied for two years before dropping out due to feeling "confined".[6][1] She spent most of her teenage years learning how to write songs professionally in studio sessions on the weekends.[7][2]

## Career

### 2014–2018: Early career and breakthrough

In November 2014, at the age of 17, Raye [independently](/source/Independent_artist) uploaded her debut [extended play](/source/Extended_play) (EP), *Welcome to the Winter*, to the audio streaming service [SoundCloud](/source/SoundCloud).[8][2][9] She wrote, recorded, and co-produced the seven tracks on the track listing.[9][8] [Olly Alexander](/source/Olly_Alexander), then the lead singer of the band [Years & Years](/source/Years_%26_Years), discovered the EP's single "Hotbox" through the music website [Hype Machine](/source/Hype_Machine) and sent it to the record label he was signed to, [Polydor Records](/source/Polydor_Records).[10][11] Raye signed a contract with them thereafter.[7] In 2015, she released the single "Alien" featuring [Avelino](/source/Avelino_(rapper)) and covered the Years & Years song "[Shine](/source/Shine_(Years_%26_Years_song))", later opening for the band's show at [Shepherd's Bush Empire](/source/Shepherd's_Bush_Empire).[12]

Raye's following EP, *Second*, was released in August 2016 through Polydor.[13] She co-wrote its single "I, U, Us" with the singers [Noonie Bao](/source/Noonie_Bao) and [Charli XCX](/source/Charli_XCX); the latter also directed the song's music video.[14] The same year, Raye featured on [Jonas Blue](/source/Jonas_Blue)'s "[By Your Side](/source/By_Your_Side_(Jonas_Blue_song))" and [Jax Jones](/source/Jax_Jones)'s "[You Don't Know Me](/source/You_Don't_Know_Me_(Jax_Jones_song))", which respectively reached numbers fifteen and three on the [UK singles chart](/source/UK_singles_chart).[15][16] "By Your Side" became her first song to enter the chart.[17] Months later, Raye served as an opening act for a concert tour by the singer [Jess Glynne](/source/Jess_Glynne).[18][19]

Raye performed at the club [XOYO](/source/XOYO) in London in February 2017, receiving positive reviews from publications.[20][21] She worked on Charli XCX's "[After the Afterparty](/source/After_the_Afterparty)", and appeared on the "VIP" remix to the song with the singer [Rita Ora](/source/Rita_Ora) and the rapper [Stefflon Don](/source/Stefflon_Don).[6][22] Raye starred on the music video for the [Stormzy](/source/Stormzy) song "Big For Your Boots" in the same month,[23] and featured on the track "Dreamer" from Charli XCX's collaborative project *[Number 1 Angel](/source/Number_1_Angel)* (2017).[24] The singles "[The Line](/source/The_Line_(Raye_song))" and "[Decline](/source/Decline_(song))" were also released in 2017; the latter featured the singer [Mr Eazi](/source/Mr_Eazi).[25][7] Raye's third EP, *Side Tape*, premiered in 2018,[26] following the release of the single "Cigarette", which features Don and the singer [Mabel](/source/Mabel_(singer)).[27] In parallel, Raye received writing credits on songs by the girl group [Little Mix](/source/Little_Mix) and the singer [John Legend](/source/John_Legend).[26] In June, Raye performed at the [Summertime Ball](/source/Summertime_Ball) in London, held by the radio network [Capital](/source/Capital_(radio_network)).[28] Later in 2018, she released a stand-alone single dedicated to her friends and supported Ora and the singer-songwriter [Halsey](/source/Halsey_(singer)) on their respective concert tours.[29][30][31] Raye embarked on her first headlining tour in 2018.[32]

### 2019–2021: *Euphoric Sad Songs* and departure from Polydor

In 2019, Raye featured on [Odunsi the Engine](/source/Odunsi_the_Engine)'s song "Tipsy" and [David Guetta](/source/David_Guetta)'s song "[Stay (Don't Go Away)](/source/Stay_(Don't_Go_Away))", released in March and May, respectively.[33][34] The latter became Raye's first number-one song on *[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine))'*s US [Dance/Mix Show Airplay](/source/Dance/Mix_Show_Airplay) chart.[35] She supported the singer [Khalid](/source/Khalid_(American_singer)) on his [Free Spirit World Tour](/source/Free_Spirit_World_Tour).[36] Raye co-wrote the track "[Bigger](/source/Bigger_(Beyonc%C3%A9_song))" by the singer [Beyoncé](/source/Beyonc%C3%A9), which featured on the soundtrack album *[The Lion King: The Gift](/source/The_Lion_King:_The_Gift)*, released in July 2019. [BBC News](/source/BBC_News) believed that it was "arguably her biggest song-writing credit" at the time.[37] Between August and November 2019, Raye released the solo single "[Love Me Again](/source/Love_Me_Again_(Raye_song))" and the collaboration "[Make It to Heaven](/source/Make_It_to_Heaven)" with Guetta and the producer [Morten](/source/Morten_Breum).[38]

In early 2020, Raye released "[Tequila](/source/Tequila_(Jax_Jones,_Martin_Solveig_and_Raye_song))" in collaboration with Jax Jones and the DJ [Martin Solveig](/source/Martin_Solveig), and "[Secrets](/source/Secrets_(Regard_and_Raye_song))" with the DJ [Regard](/source/Regard_(DJ)).[39] "Secrets" peaked at number six in the United Kingdom and was [certified](/source/Music_recording_certification) platinum by the [British Phonographic Industry](/source/British_Phonographic_Industry) (BPI).[15][40] In July 2020, Raye released "[Natalie Don't](/source/Natalie_Don't)",[39] which preceded her project *[Euphoric Sad Songs](/source/Euphoric_Sad_Songs)*, released in November. It included previously released songs alongside the singles "Love of Your Life" and "[Regardless](/source/Regardless_(Raye_and_Rudimental_song))", the latter in collaboration with [Rudimental](/source/Rudimental).[41][42] The project centred on the [stages of grief](/source/Stages_of_grief).[42] The critic Rachel Aroesti from *[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)* gave it a mixed review; she opined it lives up to its title but lacks personality.[43]

In February 2021, Raye collaborated with Guetta and the DJ [Joel Corry](/source/Joel_Corry) on the single "[Bed](/source/Bed_(Joel_Corry,_Raye_and_David_Guetta_song))",[44] which reached number three on the UK singles chart—marking her highest-charting single as a lead artist on the chart at the time—and topped the US Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart.[15][45] She also co-wrote and co-produced the song "[Let Them Know](/source/Let_Them_Know)" by Mabel.[46] In June, Raye released "Call On Me", a song written for her sister and intended to serve as the lead single for her debut studio album.[47] Later that month, she revealed that Polydor had been withholding her debut album for several years.[48][49][50] The statement was met with support from fellow artists.[51] Following this, Raye went on a hiatus,[52] and later announced that she had parted ways with the label to work as an independent artist.[53] Raye closed the year performing her Euphoric Sad Show headline UK and Ireland tour.[54]
