# Ray Coates

**Rayford Jerald Coates** (May 8, 1924 – July 3, 2013) was an American professional [football](/source/American_football) player. He played two seasons in the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL) as a [halfback](/source/Halfback_(American_football)) for the [New York Giants](/source/New_York_Giants). He attended [Louisiana State University](/source/Louisiana_State_University), where he played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [LSU Tigers football](/source/LSU_Tigers_football) team.[1]He was MVP of the 1947 [Cotton Bowl](/source/Cotton_Bowl_Classic). He was also a member of LSU's 1946 SEC championship baseball team. For five decades he held the LSU record for longest punt, at 76-yards against Rice in 1944.[2]

He scored four [touchdowns](/source/Touchdowns) in his professional career: three rushing in [1948](/source/1948_New_York_Giants_season) and one receiving in [1949](/source/1949_New_York_Giants_season).[3] He also threw a touchdown pass in 1948, and recorded an [interception](/source/Interception) and four [fumble](/source/Fumble) recoveries on defense in 1949.[1]
