# Raven River

The **Raven River** or South Raven River is a major tributary of the [Red Deer River](/source/Red_Deer_River) located in [Central](/source/Central_Alberta)-[Western](/source/Alberta's_Rockies) [Alberta](/source/Alberta), [Canada](/source/Canada). The river is located in both the [Clearwater County](/source/Clearwater_County,_Alberta) and [Red Deer County](/source/Red_Deer_County).[1]

## Course

The river begins somewhere in the western Alberta [foothills](/source/Foothills). Many small tributaries form the river there. The river flows in an eastern direction. The river passes near [Burnstick Lake](/source/Burnstick_Lake) (both the town and the lake), and then passes very closely to the [Clearwater River](/source/Clearwater_River_(Alberta)), which is part of a [different watershed](/source/North_Saskatchewan_River) altogether. It passes near the [Clearwater Ricinus Natural Area](/source/Clearwater_Ricinus_Natural_Area). The river then starts to follow closely to [Alberta Highway 54](/source/Alberta_Highway_54), yet never being crossed by it. It passes near [Caroline](/source/Caroline,_Alberta) and is joined by [Beaver Creek](/source/Beaver_Creek_(Alberta)) which contains the artificial [Beaver Lake](/source/Beaver_Lake_Dam_(Alberta)). [Alberta Highway 22](/source/Alberta_Highway_22) crosses the river. The river is then joined by the [North Raven River](/source/North_Raven_River) at [Raven](/source/Raven,_Alberta) and passes near the [Raven Recreation Area](/source/Raven_Recreation_Area) before it sharply turns southwards. The river is joined by [Crooked Creek](/source/Crooked_Creek_(Alberta)) near the [Medicine River Wildlife Centre](/source/Medicine_River_Wildlife_Centre).[2] The river then passes not far from [Kevisville](/source/Kevisville) before emptying into the [Red Deer River](/source/Red_Deer_River), which then enters into the artificial [Gleniffer Lake](/source/Gleniffer_Lake) formed by [Dickson Dam](/source/Dickson_Dam).

## Fish species

Raven river, especially its tributary the North Raven River, is a very popular spot for [anglers](/source/Angling).[3] [Brook trout](/source/Brook_trout), [longnose sucker](/source/Longnose_sucker), [white sucker](/source/White_sucker), and stocked [brown trout](/source/Brown_trout) are the predominant species of fish located in the river. Being a tributary of the [Red Deer River](/source/Red_Deer_River), Raven River likely also contains [northern pike](/source/Northern_pike), [sauger](/source/Sauger), [lake whitefish](/source/Lake_whitefish), [yellow perch](/source/Yellow_perch), [burbot](/source/Burbot), [lake sturgeon](/source/Lake_sturgeon), [mountain whitefish](/source/Mountain_whitefish), [goldeye](/source/Goldeye), [brown trout](/source/Brown_trout), [bull trout](/source/Bull_trout), [rainbow trout](/source/Rainbow_trout), [brook trout](/source/Brook_trout), [cutthroat trout](/source/Cutthroat_trout), [emerald shiner](/source/Emerald_shiner), [river shiner](/source/River_shiner), [spottail shiner](/source/Spottail_shiner), [flathead chub](/source/Flathead_chub), [longnose dace](/source/Longnose_dace), [quillback carpsucker](/source/Quillnack), [shorthead redhorse](/source/Shorthead_redhorse), [silver redhorse](/source/Silver_redhorse), [trout‐perch](/source/Trout%E2%80%90perch), [spoonhead sculpine](/source/Sculpine), [lake chub](/source/Lake_chub), [northern pearl dace](/source/Northern_pearl_dace), [northern redbelly dace](/source/Northern_redbelly_dace), [finescale dace](/source/Finescale_dace), [fathead minnow](/source/Fathead_minnow), [brook stickleback](/source/Brook_stickleback), and [muskellunge](/source/Muskellunge).[4]
