**Ratchawong Pier** ([Thai](/source/Thai_language): ท่าราชวงศ์, ท่าน้ำราชวงศ์, ท่าเรือราชวงศ์; designated pier code **N5**) is a [pier](/source/Pier) on the [Chao Phraya River](/source/Chao_Phraya_River) in [Bangkok](/source/Bangkok).

## History

Ratchawong Pier located at the end of [Ratchawong Road](/source/Ratchawong_Road) in the area of [Chinatown](/source/Bangkok's_Chinatown) close to historic and shopping districts, [Sampheng](/source/Sampheng) and [Song Wat Road](/source/Song_Wat_Road). The pier was the port where goods were embarking to the cargo ships anchored middle the Chao Phraya River. These ships were the main means of transport, both passengers and cargoes, links Bangkok to [Chonburi](/source/Chon_Buri_Province), [Chanthaburi](/source/Chanthaburi_Province), [Prachuap Khiri Khan](/source/Prachuap_Khiri_Khan_Province), [Chumphon](/source/Chumphon_Province), and Ban Don ([Surat Thani](/source/Surat_Thani_Province)).

At its heyday, there was a direct [tram route](/source/Trams_in_Bangkok) to the pier. Around 11:00 p.m. or midnight during [Chinese New Year](/source/Chinese_New_Year), the pier also supported large crowds of passengers taking ferries to pay homage to Sampokong, the large Buddha statue at [Wat Kanlayanamit](/source/Wat_Kanlayanamit) on the [Thonburi](/source/Thonburi) side.

Presently, the pier is one of the main ports for passenger ferries crossing Chao Phraya River to [Tha Din Daeng](/source/Tha_Din_Daeng%2C_Bangkok), another Bangkok's Chinatown. The private company owns the ferry or passenger ship business. [1][2] Based on 2002 data, about 25,000 people use this pier per day.[3]

In addition, in the post-[World War II](/source/Thailand_in_World_War_II) (1950s), the area around pier was considered a venue for young people similar to [Siam Square](/source/Siam_Square) at present. It was a centre of many famous and tasty restaurants.[4]
