===Youth and college===
Cox attended [Stadium High School](/source/Stadium_High_School), and played one year of [college soccer](/source/College_soccer_in_the_United_States) at [Highline Community College](/source/Highline_Community_College) in [Des Moines, Washington](/source/Des_Moines%2C_Washington), before transferring to the [University of Washington](/source/University_of_Washington) in sophomore year. At Washington he was a two-time All-Pac-10 honoree, and was named to the All-Pac-10 first-team as a senior. During his college years he also played with [Colorado Rapids U23's](/source/Colorado_Rapids_U23's) and [Tacoma Tide](/source/Tacoma_Tide) in the [USL Premier Development League](/source/USL_Premier_Development_League).

Cox was drafted in the fourth round (54th overall) of the [2009 MLS SuperDraft](/source/2009_MLS_SuperDraft) by [Real Salt Lake](/source/Real_Salt_Lake).
