**Ranis** (German pronunciation: [\[ˈʁaːnɪs\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Standard_German) [ⓘ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:De-Ranis.ogg)) is a town in the [Saale-Orla-Kreis](/source/Saale-Orla-Kreis) district, in [Thuringia](/source/Thuringia), [Germany](/source/Germany). It is situated 15 km east of [Saalfeld](/source/Saalfeld), and 30 km south of [Jena](/source/Jena).

The cave [Ilsenhöhle](/source/Ilsenh%C3%B6hle) [[de](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilsenh%C3%B6hle)] under Ranis Castle, where up 47-45,000 years old *Homo sapiens* remains were found, among the oldest in Europe, associated with the [LRJ archaeological culture](/source/Lincombian-Ranisian-Jerzmanowician).[3]
