**Ranheim Church** ([Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language): *Ranheim kirke*) is a [parish church](/source/Parish_church) of the [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) in [Trondheim Municipality](/source/Trondheim_Municipality) in [Trøndelag](/source/Tr%C3%B8ndelag) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). It is located in [Ranheim](/source/Ranheim), a neighbourhood in the east of [Trondheim](/source/City_of_Trondheim). It is one of the churches for the *Ranheim og Charlottenlund* [parish](/source/Parish) which is part of the [Strinda prosti](/source/Strinda_prosti) ([deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Nidaros](/source/Diocese_of_Nidaros). The white, stone church was built in a [cruciform](/source/Churches_in_Norway#Floor_plan) style using plans drawn up by the [architect](/source/Architect) [Roar Tønseth](/source/Roar_T%C3%B8nseth) (1895-1985).[1] The church seats about 200 people.[2][3]

## History

The first chapel in Ranheim was a wooden [long church](/source/Long_church) built in 1898 using designs by the [architect](/source/Architect) [Karl Norum](/source/Karl_Norum). The chapel was [consecrated](/source/Consecrate) on 20 April 1898 and it seated about 350 people. The church was struck by [lightning](/source/Lightning) shortly before midnight on 25 January 1932 and the church caught fire and burned to the ground in about an hour. Some of the altar equipment, the priestly garments, and some of the furniture from the [sacristy](/source/Sacristy) were able to be saved. A new church was built in 1933 that was [consecrated](/source/Consecrate) on 20 April 1933 by the Bishop [Johan Nicolai Støren](/source/Johan_Nicolai_St%C3%B8ren). The new church sits about 100 metres (330 ft) northeast of the site of the old church. The new church is a [cruciform](/source/Cruciform) design with very short [transepts](/source/Transepts). The church was renovated in 2013.[4][5]
