This test assumes a recent [meal](/source/meal) and therefore has higher [reference values](/source/reference_values) than the fasting blood glucose (FBG) test.

Most mentions of [capillary blood glucose](/source/capillary_blood_glucose) (CBG) tests refer to random, nonfasting instances thereof, but the real distinction in that term is capillary blood glucose versus venous blood glucose, arterial blood glucose, or interstitial fluid glucose; any fingerstick or optical transdermal glucose test, fasting or nonfasting, measures capillary blood glucose level.

==Reference values==
The reference values for a "normal" random glucose test in an average adult are 80–140[mg](/source/milligram)/[dl](/source/deciliter) (4.4–7.8 [mmol](/source/milimole)/l). A value between 140 and 200[mg](/source/milligram)/[dl](/source/deciliter) (7.8–11.1 [mmol](/source/milimole)/l) is considered pre-diabetes.
