The [parish](/source/Prestegjeld) of Randaberg was established as a municipality on 1 July 1922 when it was separated from the large [Hetland Municipality](/source/Hetland_Municipality). Initially, there were 1,256 residents of the new municipality. The municipal borders have not changed since that time.[7]

### Name

The municipality (originally the [parish](/source/Prestegjeld)) is named after the old *[Randaberg](/source/Randaberg_(village))* farm ([Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse_language): *Randarberg*) since the first [Randaberg Church](/source/Randaberg_Church) was built there. The first element is the plural [genitive case](/source/Genitive_case) of *[rǫnd](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/r%C7%ABnd#Old_Norse)* which means "edge" or "rim". The last element is *[berg](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/berg#Old_Norse)* which means "mountain", "rock" or "cliff". Before the early 1900s, the area was known as *Randeberg*.[8]

### Coat of arms

The [coat of arms](/source/Coat_of_arms) was granted on 26 June 1981. The official [blazon](/source/Blazon) is *"[Azure](/source/Azure_(heraldry)), fourteen [plates](/source/Roundel_(heraldry)) in [orle](/source/Orle_(heraldry))"* ([Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language): *I blått 14 sølv mynter langs randen*). This means the arms have a blue [field](/source/Field_(heraldry)) (background) and the [charge](/source/Charge_(heraldry)) is a set of fourteen circles that outline the shield. The charge has a [tincture](/source/Tincture_(heraldry)) of [argent](/source/Argent) which means it is commonly colored white, but if it is made out of metal, then silver is used. The circles are meant to symbolize silver coins. The arms are partly [canting](/source/Canting_arms) since the name of the municipality is derived from a word that means "edge" and the [coins](/source/Coin) are placed around edge of the shield. The coins symbolize the ball-shaped [stones](/source/Rock_(geology)) found in large amounts on the [beach](/source/Beach) in Randaberg. The arms were designed by Truls Nygaard who based it off a preliminary design by Magnus Hardeland. The municipal flag is rectangular and has the same design as the coat of arms.[9][10][11]

## Economy

View of Sandestraen

Randaberg is still an active agricultural community, and produces over 80% of Norway's [parsley](/source/Parsley). About 60% of the land is [arable](/source/Arable_land), and about 2% of the inhabitants are engaged in agriculture. Dairy production, chickens, and pigs are important industries. Only [Klepp Municipality](/source/Klepp_Municipality) surpasses Randaberg Municipality in agricultural production in Rogaland county. The first [potatoes](/source/Potato) every year are grown in Randaberg and are given to the [Royal Family of Norway](/source/Royal_Family_of_Norway). However, due to its close proximity to the large city of [Stavanger](/source/Stavanger_(city)), the area is becoming more urban. There are three main [suburbs](/source/Suburb) of Stavanger where most of Randaberg's residents live: [Randaberg village](/source/Randaberg_(village)), Viste/Goa, and [Grødem](/source/Gr%C3%B8dem).

## History

Some of the first inhabitants of Norway settled here, and it is believed that the first people came here around 12,000 years ago. It is thought that [Svarthola](/source/Svarthola) (local name: Vistehålå) was the main shelter for a group of 25 persons, from around 6000 BC. These people were mainly [gatherers and hunters](/source/Hunter-gatherer), but from around 4000 BC they also started farming. From around 2000 BC, their main activity was farming.
