'''''Ramphiculus''''' is a [genus](/source/genus) of fruit doves in the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Columbidae](/source/Columbidae). They are restricted to the Philippines and [Sulawesi](/source/Sulawesi) apart from the [Jambu fruit dove](/source/Jambu_fruit_dove) that occurs on the [Malay Peninsula](/source/Malay_Peninsula), [Sumatra](/source/Sumatra) and [Borneo](/source/Borneo), and the [black-chinned fruit dove](/source/black-chinned_fruit_dove) which extends north to [Taiwan](/source/Taiwan). These are colourful frugivorous doves that are found in forests and woodlands.

==Taxonomy==
The genus ''Ramphiculus'' was introduced in 1854 by the French naturalist [Charles Lucien Bonaparte](/source/Charles_Lucien_Bonaparte) who listed two species but did not specify a [type species](/source/type_species).<ref>{{ cite journal | last=Bonaparte | first=Charles Lucien | author-link=Charles Lucien Bonaparte | year=1854 | title=Coup d'oeil sur les pigeons  | language=French | journal=Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de l'Académie des Sciences | volume=39 | pages=869–880 [878] | url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/2820059 }}</ref> In 1855 the English zoologist [George Gray](/source/George_Robert_Gray) designated the type as ''Ptilonopus occipitalis'' Gray GR, 1844, the [yellow-breasted fruit dove](/source/yellow-breasted_fruit_dove).<ref>{{ cite book | last=Gray | first=George Robert | author-link=George Robert Gray | year=1855 | title=Catalogue of the Genera and Subgenera of Birds Contained in the British Museum | location=London | publisher=British Museum | page=97 | url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/17136736 }}</ref> The genus name is a diminutive of the [Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek) ῥαμφη/''rhamphē'' meaning "bill".<ref>{{ cite web | last=Jobling | first=James A. | title=Ramphiculus | work=The Key to Scientific Names | url=https://birdsoftheworld.org/bow/key-to-scientific-names/search?q=Ramphiculus | publisher=Cornell Lab of Ornithology | access-date=3 November 2025 }}</ref>

The species placed in this genus were formerly placed in the genus ''[Ptilinopus](/source/Ptilinopus)''. A molecular genetic study published in 2014 found that the fruit dove genus ''Ptilinopus'' was [paraphyletic](/source/paraphyletic).<ref>{{Cite journal | last1=Cibois | first1=A. | last2=Thibault | first2=J.-C. | last3=Bonillo | first3=C. | last4=Filardi | first4=C.E. | last5=Watling | first5=D. | last6=Pasquet | first6=E. | date=2014 | title=Phylogeny and biogeography of the fruit doves (Aves: Columbidae) | journal=Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution | volume=70 | pages=442-453 | doi=10.1016/j.ympev.2013.08.019}}</ref> In a step towards creating [monophyletic](/source/monophyletic) genera, two species were moved from ''Ptilinopus'' to ''[Megaloprepia](/source/Megaloprepia)'' and nine species were moved from ''Ptilinopus'' to ''Ramphiculus''.<ref name=avilist>{{ cite web | author=AviList Core Team | date=2025 | title=AviList: The Global Avian Checklist, v2025 | doi=10.2173/avilist.v2025 | doi-access=free | url=http://www.avilist.org/checklist/v2025/ | access-date=2 November 2025 }}</ref>
