**Ralph Philip Martin** (4 August 1925 – 25 February 2013[1]) was a British [New Testament](/source/New_Testament) scholar.

Martin was born in [Anfield](/source/Anfield_(suburb)), Liverpool, England and was educated at the [Liverpool Collegiate School](/source/Liverpool_Collegiate_School), the [University of Manchester](/source/University_of_Manchester) and [King's College London](/source/King's_College_London).[2] He taught at the [London Bible College](/source/London_Bible_College), the [University of Manchester](/source/University_of_Manchester), the [University of Sheffield](/source/University_of_Sheffield), [Azusa Pacific University](/source/Azusa_Pacific_University), and [Fuller Theological Seminary](/source/Fuller_Theological_Seminary).[3][4]

He trained for the Baptist ministry at Manchester Baptist College, and was ordained in 1949.[4] He married Lily Nelson and they had two children;[4] after Lily’s death, he married Doreen Jones.

He served as a pastor for 10 years before going into teaching.[3] He taught in England for 10 years before joining Fuller in California; he worked there for almost 20 years before returning to England in 1988.[4]

While in the US, Martin published several books on the New Testament, and edited several others.[5] Martin wrote commentaries on [Mark](/source/Gospel_of_Mark), [Romans](/source/Epistle_to_the_Romans), [Philippians](/source/Philippians), and [James](/source/Epistle_of_James).

In 1992, a *[Festschrift](/source/Festschrift)* was published in his honour, *Worship, Theology and Ministry in the Early Church: Essays in Honor of Ralph P. Martin*, which included contributions from [James Dunn](/source/James_Dunn_(theologian)), [E. Earle Ellis](/source/E._Earle_Ellis), [Donald Guthrie](/source/Donald_Guthrie_(theologian)), [I. Howard Marshall](/source/I._Howard_Marshall), and [Leon Morris](/source/Leon_Morris).
