**Ralph Manza** (December 1, 1921 – January 31, 2000)[1] was an American [character actor](/source/Character_actor) who made over 160 appearances in American film and television shows.

## Early years

Manza was born in San Francisco on December 1, 1921. His Italian parents wanted him to be a surgeon.[2] A pre-med student at [UC-Berkeley](/source/UC-Berkeley) in the early 1940s, Manza was drafted into the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II). He was serving as a medic in the Army when he was assigned to an acting troupe.[3] In that capacity he toured Iceland playing in musicals. When he returned after the war, he took classes at Elizabeth Halloway's School of Acting in San Francisco.[2]

## Career

The diminutive Manza appeared on daytime television briefly in 1963 as an original cast member of the [ABC-TV](/source/American_Broadcasting_Company) [soap opera](/source/Soap_opera) series *[General Hospital](/source/General_Hospital)*, where he played the role of Mike Costello. Manza went on to become a character actor appearing on many primetime TV series in guest role spots, beginning in the 1950s with the TV crime/drama series *[Highway Patrol](/source/Highway_Patrol_(U.S._TV_series))*, and *[Alfred Hitchcock Presents](/source/Alfred_Hitchcock_Presents)*.

In 1959 Manza was cast as assistant district attorney Al Bonacorsi in the NBC-TV series *[The D.A.'s Man](/source/The_D.A.'s_Man).* At that time he had been driving a taxi at night in Hollywood for three years.[2]

This part of his acting career continued to flourish through the 1960s, with appearances on such shows as *[77 Sunset Strip](/source/77_Sunset_Strip)*, *[McHale's Navy](/source/McHale's_Navy)*, *[Perry Mason](/source/Perry_Mason_(1957_TV_series))*, *[The Twilight Zone](/source/The_Twilight_Zone_(1959_TV_series))*, *[Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.](/source/Gomer_Pyle%2C_U.S.M.C.)* and *[Gunsmoke](/source/Gunsmoke)*, continuing in the 1970s and 1980s on such series such as *[Get Smart](/source/Get_Smart)*, *[My Three Sons](/source/My_Three_Sons)*, *[Night Gallery](/source/Night_Gallery)*, *[Police Woman](/source/Police_Woman_(TV_series))*, *[Hart to Hart](/source/Hart_to_Hart)*, *[Chico and the Man](/source/Chico_and_the_Man)*, *[Barney Miller](/source/Barney_Miller)* (in 7 episodes), *[Benson](/source/Benson_(TV_series))*, *[Simon and Simon](/source/Simon_and_Simon)*, *[Night Court](/source/Night_Court)*, *[The Golden Girls](/source/The_Golden_Girls)*, *[Newhart](/source/Newhart)*, *[Mama's Family](/source/Mama's_Family)*, *[Growing Pains](/source/Growing_Pains)*, and on *[Banacek](/source/Banacek)*, co-starring as perpetually puzzled chauffeur Jay Drury.

He went into the 1990s with appearances on [NBC-TV's](/source/NBC-TV) *[Seinfeld](/source/Seinfeld)* and *[Friends](/source/Friends)*, [CBS-TV's](/source/CBS-TV) *[The Nanny](/source/The_Nanny)*, and [ABC-TV's](/source/American_Broadcasting_Company) *[Home Improvement](/source/Home_Improvement_(TV_series))*. Manza also made appearances in several feature films, perhaps most memorably as the actor playing Hitler in [Mel Brooks](/source/Mel_Brooks)' 1974 comedy *[Blazing Saddles](/source/Blazing_Saddles)* ("They lose me after the bunker scene"), and as the fisherman whose scene in the 1998 *[Godzilla](/source/Godzilla_(1998_film))* was used as the film's first teaser.

## Death

Manza died in January 2000 in [Scripps Health-Encintas Hospital](/source/Scripps_Health) in [Encinitas, California](/source/Encinitas%2C_California) of a heart attack. He had suffered a heart attack three weeks earlier as well, while filming a commercial for [Budweiser](/source/Budweiser).[3]
